Grandaddy had a Farmall 140 that he bought new in November of 1960. I heard him talk about it in my younger days and would like to find it if possible. All I know for sure is the chassis serial number is 5765 with engine serial number of 80136. It was traded in the early to mid 70's at the IH dealer at the time in Goldsboro NC on William St. which has long since closed. Any leads would be greatly appreciated.

Well the good is at least you have a serial number. Most of the time these type messages just describe the tractor and that is it. I would say your chances are slim to none but stranger things have happened. Sixty year old tractor are getting harder to come by. Good luck on you hunt.

Mechanically, the Farmall and later
the IH are the same thing except the
early Farmalls had a slightly slower
steering to them. This was later
changed back to the fast (normal)
steering that was on the 100 and
maybe 1965 year model 140's till end of
production in 1979.

Thanks jm. I know it's a long shot of finding it, especially in operable condition. I have been looking locally with no luck so far. It has been one of those things that I've wanted to be able to mark off of my bucket list so to speak and get a little use out of it in the produce production.

Thanks Richard. Yes they were and still are very handy tractors. A lot of them locally that are left were once the primary tractors that was used in tobacco production. There is no telling how many miles got put on one in a years time from planting, cultivating, spraying, and hauling a crop out of the field.

Mine is a bit newer at 12547. It would be nice to know how many of the offset Farmalls and Internationals from the A through the 140 were still being used. I will be on the lookout here.

Ok, thank you Jim. There is still a fair amount of 1 row Farmalls in ownership still. Very seldom do I hear tell of one being sold unless they are updating to a newer compact style, and that is mainly the newer generation doing so.

Consider any local clubs or national registry for IH tractors. I talked to a lady at my Township Offices about tractors. She said her husband found his grandfather's tractor, a 194(?) H, just a few miles away and was able to buy it.

That is a good suggestion. There is 1 IH club that I'm aware of that I'll check with if I can find the contact info for them.
