Diesel Injection pump

My AC 175D 2.48 Perkins....CAV(DPA/Lucas) type 3248850 mechanical advance injector pump is leaking fuel from around the throttle shaft. How hard is to remove the top cover of the pump as I want to
replace the seals on the throttle shaft. Actually I found a kit with a new throttle shaft included. Are there any precautions I need to take? I noticed that a metering screw passes through the top cover...???
I've consulted an IPB drawing and it kinda looks straight forward with just one stud holding the throttle and shut off shaft(s) cover. Should I be concerned about 'wear' where the throttle shaft goes
through the cover? Other than the fuel leak, the pump seems to be working fine.

Thanks for the assist

For best results the complete pump assembly should have all gaskets and seals replaced. While the top cover 'patch job' MIGHT be OK for now, my experience has been other fuel leaks will show up soon after. The hydraulic head seal, transfer cap seal, and drive hub seal are leaks I see often besides the top cover shaft leaks on pumps I repair weekly.

I would do as Dieseltech suggest. He works on these things for a living. Many of us can suggest what to do. It is not something you want to play with. One wrong move and you can be looking money.

To look at this another way, if you are reasonably mechanically adept, can clean up the area and keep it clean while working AND can take note of EXACTLY how a couple of little spring(s) and linkage(s) are hooked up and put it back together correctly it's not hard to do and CHEAP and may put off the task of R+R'ing the I.P. and the $$$ of sending it off/taking it to a shop, and spending $$$ there for a long time.

The procedure has been covered many times in the Massey or Ford Forums and an archive search should turn up that info. (Or would on a site with decent software!)

As is always a good idea, before startup, be prepared to block off the air intake on the odd chance something has been put together wrong or jammed and the engine "runs away" at startup.

So why is it leaking around the throttle shaft? Is there fuel under the 'cover' from an internal leak. Are the o-ring seals on the throttle shaft just to keep out dust/dirt?
Thanks Dieseltech

The throttle shaft/stop shaft leaks happen over time when the O rings fail because there's diesel fuel under the cover. Top cover leaks usually start first, then OTHER leaks show up soon after. That's why I stopped doing the top cover leak repairs only, too many times I've seen the other leaks show up shortly after, and then owner is ticked because pump is leaking again.
