Ferguson ring gear

I replaced the ring gear on my Ferguson TO-20 about 4 years ago. The starter has now knocked it back far enough to not engage, so time to split the tractor again. Is the best fix spot welding it? Putting dimples behind it with a punch? I assumed the shrink fit was tight enough but apparently not. I didnt replace anything else at the time like clutch, bearings or seals. Most people would advise do so while in there but I wonder about new parts quality for very obvious reasons. The rear engine seal does leak some so I assume maybe go after that at a minimum? Thanks.

If you have the old ring gear and there is a shoulder that they are supposed to go back against maybe it was the wrong ring gear that was put on or maybe you need to use the old one for a shim to hold the new one out in place for it to work. Could stater be the wrong one with to short of nose on it. Just seems strange a ring gear can move away from the starter like that the reason for the doubt about parts. Most of them I have been around have a ledge for the ring gear to come against when on so they are straight on the flywheel.

That's a common problem on those, especially when converted to 12 volts.

You can reach in through the starter hole and pry it back on, or make a slide hammer hook and pull it back.

The usual fix is to spot tack it from the back side.

caterpiller guy, early TO's had ledge on opposite side from later TO's, so starter gear could drive ring gear away from engine into bell housing. I hold ring gear in place with cap screws and bent and flat washers if I remember correctly.
There is more info in the archives.

Thanks for replies. Yes, I believe mine is an early serial number and the shoulder is towards the starter. I put the ring gear on myself. I had the starter converted to 12 volts so it has some umpf to it. Oh well. Another split and get it tack welded. .
