John Deere Dealer

Oh how I hate my local Deere dealer.
They are one nose stuck in the air crowd now that they have bought out about every Deere dealer in SE La.
Lost the key for X350 mower.
John Deere site using my dealer says it is in stock for $2.82
Local dealer web site says 360 available and 20 in stock at this location for $3.38
Thats Deere list price plus 20 percent.
About typical for my dealer for over the counter parts.
And do not tell them you need a not in stock item.
The shipping will kill you.
And they wonder why I order most of my parts from a out of town dealer over the internet.

I realize we are only talking a few cents for this item.
That is why I went to town and got it.
I need it today so I am willing to pay the 20 percent markup.
But Deere parts are expensive enough without having to pay list plus 20 percent for all the parts you may need like belts
blades or oil change kits.

Rant over.
Going to cut my grass.

Did you log in and order the key on-line for pickup at the dealership?

The dealership I am set up with would have had it in the will call area ready for pickup, and at $2.82 minus a 5% discount for ordering on-line.

If only you had the privilege of dealing with the mega Case dealer which has been around here for decades................ I can say that my area JD dealers still put some effort in courting my business.

I am a Deere guy but working on a IH 400 gas, picked up a pan gasket from CIH $65, yt wants 10.30, steiners wants 16.69. So i know what you are talking about, and CNH is getting there's back.

Local CNH dealer used to get perturbed when I'd order online and pick up there.

Mostly 'cause I payed less doing it that way.

Oh well

It's almost useless to debate this subject. Sometimes the product is great and the dealer is a waste and vice-versa. That being said you would think manufacturers would monitor their dealers for quality of service, etc. I recently got a survey from John Deere and gave them an ear full. Seems we can navigate the online parts lookup better than the dealer's parts guy and then he loses our order!

Maybe that is why Deere has a franchise of dealers that handle only consumer lawn and garden products and do not sell any large agricultural equipment.

Last fall I bought an IH "544" gas hydro.

It needs a valve cover gasket ($56.14) and a pushrod cover gasket ($65.15) at the FIAT dealer. $121.29 for two cork gaskets! WOW!

As a reference, a valve cover gasket for a similar in size DEERE 4-clylinder engine is $24.75 at the dealer.

I try and support the local shops ,
I bought a kubota spent over 15 K
Went to local Fair was looking around the kubota displays . The salesman was there ,never came over to say hello.
Well ok ,! Ill move on look at the other displays of equipment at the fair .

There's NO cork gasket worth $56 or $65. EVERY cork gasket I've ever had has leaked, including the oil pan and
valve cover gaskets on both my FARMALLS. The new technology gaskets, a nitrile rubber molded over a stamped
steel base is positively worth that kind of money, they positively won't leak, won't creep out of position,
with the steel framework inside the gasket they can't bend, and are re-usable MANY times. Costs a bit to tool
up stamping dies, lasers can burn them out pretty quick but the rubber molding dies are machined and typically
polished, read Expensive, but they are a great gasket. First set I used was on my '88 Mustang GT 5.0L HO,
about 1989, the OEM cork valve cover gaskets leaking like a severe, new Motorsports gaskets were $20+ each,
but stopped the leak and we had those valve covers off a dozen or more times.
If somebody had a plasma cutting table they could cut the steel framework and a coating of a good gasket
sealant like Hylomar Blue would make those gaskets pretty cheap.

I was going to ask if he has been to an AGCO or Case dealer lately. They are no shame for pricing high. Just soak you with no issue. they make Deere parts look cheap anymore. I also find they all are some high and some not so much. Depends on the parts. I just bought seed disc's a couple weeks ago from Deere for the White planter. When I called he asked if they would fit. I brought one of the old ones a new one from shoup and a new one from AGCO dealer. Deere was the same as Shoup except for the color of the hub and Deere disc said made in USA on the disc while the shoup said made in Canada I believe like the White disc did. Deere ships the cap in the hub and gets flattened a bit while shoup ships them separate so they are not flattened. Put 22 Deere discs on the planter.

For how few "544" gaskets CaseIH sells in a year, there is no way on God's green earth that they are going to retool and develop a "modern" gasket.

It's not as simple as punch a new gasket out of a modern material. The gasket needs to be tested to see if it fits, if it seals, and if it holds. That's months of R&D on a FIFTY YEAR OLD TRACTOR who's engine was only ever used in that ONE tractor.

I've said it before, I'll say it again, there has to be a REASON for CaseIH to keep parts in stock for FIFTY YEAR OLD tractors. It's not "goodwill to the customer." How many people with Farmall 544's are coming in and leasing a new Steiger or combine every year? "Parts are their bread and butter" but parts for <10 year old Steigers and combines, not the guy piddling around on his old 544 that needs a gasket and hasn't set foot in the dealership in 5 years.

I was in the CaseIH dealer a sum total of 4 times last year, and I don't think I spent $1000 total. Some oil, some plow parts, and a couple of steel hydraulic lines for 56 series tractors. The way some of you talk I should be expecting the royal treatment...

Kind of funny, but just yesterday I drove into town and bought some cork gasket material, stuff comes in handy so I like to have it around. I had to make new gaskets for the Fergusen valve cover. It wasn't as thick as the original and I had to double it up for the crank case vent tube. All told I spent $10.06 for gasket material, about $4.00 gas, and $12.00 for my labor (3@$4.00hr.) so a grand total of $26.06. After I got done I decided to see how much I saved by making it myself. I looked it up on this site and the gaskets were the same cost as what I paid for the material. So even with $8.00 for shipping I would have been better off to just order them.

I don't mind spending a little extra to support the local guy, but geez, I can't afford to spend money like a drunken Rockefeller either.

Guys I was not complaining about the price of dealer parts.
It is the markup over list price that gets me.
Like going to the store and picking out a $20 steak then when you get to the checkout them saying that will be $24.
Car dealers were doing this a few months ago.
Charging 10 percent over window sticker price.
The manufacture told them you need to stop this practice.
You think mother Deere would do the same.
