This is a pic of my Dad's hired hand on a JD A pulling a cornstock chopper and a disk. I think the Woods brothers were the first to make a cornstock chopper.

The pic is from the 1950's

I decided to post this pic because someone below asked about a rear discharge mower. The cornstock shopper is a rear discharge..

I got a 2-120 woods mower, you darn right that's a rear discharge, mine will throw a steel fence post 100 feet, to the rear, don't ever let kids or other people follow you when you are mowing !

Had a 4 HP riding mower throw a 1 inch dog bone through the neighbors 1/4 inch plate glass window when I was a kid!

Probably flew 30 feet before hitting the window. Hit right on the corner, the bone stuck in the wood trim!

This is me getting ready to chop corn stocks, using a heavy duty Brillion rotary cutter at 13-14 yrs. old and just jumped off school bus. It would go thru anything the D would drag it thru, 65 years ago.

I have many hours of seat time on a JD D. Hand crank.
At the end of the day, my head was throbbing.
The JD D had a straight pipe, no muffler..
Powerful tractor for its time...

I drove this one into town elevator each summer for them to use to spot box cars during wheat harvest, go back and get when done with wheat. Tomato ground would get the D and chopper before corn stocks. Canning factory had a date to have all hampers removed or I would chop piles of them higher that the D.

do you remember what year of model A you had?
looks like a late one, did it handle thee lower and disc combination ok?
thanks

I thought that, too... it's a healthy A, and a great picture. I'm guessing 3rd gear tops with the slow speed transmission. Back then you'd be happy to combine operations at any speed. Today, somebody would want to do that at 8 mph!

No, I was about 6 when this pic was taken around 1955.
At the time, Dad farmed with 3 JD A's
