oil bath air filter cup water infill RE VISIT

RE VISIT FROM OER # WEEK AGO>
Went out to start the IHC Farmall BN this morning After it sitting for 3 weeks out side opened the oil sump on the air breather '>>>>IT WAS FULL OF WATER<< the last time I ran the tractor I emptied out any oil there in and wiped it dry [ 3 weeks ago]
So now I know that water is getting in some how; into the oil sump. I will place a plastic bag over the breather to to eliminate water leaking in that way. and report in.
Wm.

You may want to post a pic. It could have the original breather but it could also have an aftermarket.

This unit is all original as it came from the factory; no modifications to the air intake [the same air intake was used on the A,B,BN,C]

Not likely rain is getting up under the rain cap unless it was pressure washed and water was forced up and in.

Look around the top of the canister for rust or cracks. Possibly water is tracking down the outside of the upper tube and entering that way. You could try using a spray bottle to recreate the problem if you don't see anything obvious.

There should be engine oil in the sump up to the FULL line embossed into the container. There should be (at least) a dome shaped cover on the top of the intake above the hood. The top of the upper canister where that pipe enters could be rusted out, allowing rain to enter. It is difficult to see with the hood on, but a good light, and looking down beside the pipe might show the issue. A Donaldson jar type precleaner is a standard pipe topper. I have had this type of filter on 15 tractors, and none ever had water in them. Jim

Have you looked at the joint where the tube joins the the top of the housing, any cracking or other defects there? May have to leak test it by pulling it off; cap off the outlet to the engine and the top tube and shove it down in a drum of water upside down to see if it leaks in. Or if you have an old tire tube you could cut it near the valve stem and hose clamp it over the housing where the cup goes on. Double over the tube and clamp it shut past the valve stem. Plug off as stated above and apply pressure through the valve stem and look for leaks with soapy water. This way would not require removal.

On the next dry day, take off the cup, watch at the bottom of the filter assembly and have someone mist the top of tractor with water. You should see it start to dribble out the bottom where the cup would be. Then trace your leak back up the housing.

Look where the body of the air cleaner attaches to the bracket. If it has straps around it it may be rusted out around the straps letting water in by them. sort of like a fuel tank rusts out under the straps.

I had the same mystery with my WC Allis. I thought that rain was getting in through the top cap and covered it with a bag and a pail, still had water in the oil cup. Took the air cleaner assembly out of the tractor and found that the inlet tube had been pushed down and the dome of the top was smashed and there were cracks at the base of the inlet tube where it went into the air cleaner. I plugged them with some JB Weld. that was the winter before last, so far, so good.
