Fredericksburg Tractor Ride

The Hill Country tractor club put together another fun ride yesterday inspite of dry windy weather. It is billed as the Hill Country Bluebonnet Ride and I did see 4 but the area is in a Stage 5 Exceptional Drought. There were about 30 tractors including 9 down from New Mexico. You can see in the pics how dangerous it would be for a wildfire to break out. There have already been several in Texas this year including one that burned much of a small town. Normally I'm not in any photos since I'm behind the camera but my cousin was following me and took one. He even got my good side.

Looks like fun. How many miles? Too bad it was so dry. A nice cookout with all those steaks on the hoof. LOL
My wife, my sister and I went to Fredericksburg in February. Nice drive from New Braunfels where my sister lives.
I had not been to the Nimitz Museum expansion.

The ride this year was only about 10 miles from one old historic county school to another then back after some good tamales, chili and beans. We crosse3d several dry low water crossings that would have been neat if there was any creek flow. After lunch we rode back. RE: the Nimitz. My last visit there was about 3 years ago with my FIL and a group of veterans from the VA long term care unit in Kerrvile. Being with them added to the experience. I'd advise anyone visiting F'burg to skip a winery or 2 and visit the Nimitz. New Braunfels is not the quiet quaint town it was 10 - 15 years ago. So much has changed around here. But then I'm old and heard Change is good too many times when I was working. Glad you enjoyed your visit.

I remember a few years ago Texas was in a bad drought.
That summer you could not go more than a few hours without seeing a load of hay passing my house on I 12 headed for Texas.
Load after load after load headed west.
Beef prices plummeted as people sold off cows they could not afford to feed.
Hopefully this will not be one of those years.

They say we are in a severe drought in Louisiana.
We have had 8 inches of rain instead of our normal 16 inches of rain.
Burn bands in effect.
I say come on people 8 inches of rain in 3 months is nothing to get your nnalert in a wad over.

John, that was a couple of years up to 2011 when the big wildfire swept thru Bastrop and adjoining counties. Many of the water supply reservoirs were extremely low. Then we had 3 500 year floods in the nest 2 years. Typical Texas.

I use to be a few miles from Austin. Now I am surrounded. I'm sure you noticed on the drive how development is eating up all the ranch and farm land.

Yes! We use Austin Airport and avoid I-35 above San Marcos b130y taking 21 east to 183. accidently got onto 130 and going to the next exit cost me $7.
The construction along 21 is tremendous. That route will soon be to bottled up.

Our ranch in Fredericksburg has had less than an inch of rain since Aug. (.7 to be exact). That doesn't take in account the 2 small ice storms. wjytexas is spot on the 2011 drought. I waited in line at the auction for over 3 hrs. to get cattle unloaded. Got an 18 wheeler load of hay out of Missouri that saved a few cows. Unless something happens fast, hay is going to be almost impossible to get in this area. Diesel running 5$ a gal is going to make hauling expensive.

this sounds harsh but we need a SMALL tropical depression to drift in and up over the Hill Country.
