JD autonomous and electric

Yesterday morning I watched a u tube video on JD autonomous and electric tractor. Interesting. Then I went and picked up the 1944 Case LA that I just purchased. I wonder if the JD will still be working in 78 years??????????? Bill

I don't know how many things will be working in 78 years.

My mom's Farmall is a year younger than I am. It will be working long after I'm gone. It's our 6 ft lawn mower.

How many 72 year old lawn mowers are still working?

You can answer that question by stopping at salvage yards and checking the age of their inventory Colfax Salvage in Colfax,Ia is a good starting point.

In 78 years our great grandchildren will be the same age we are now. Will any of our great grandchildren, great great grandchildren or great great great grandchildren still want to use it by then? I don't understand the fascination that something may not last long enough to serve three generations. Most buyers of new equipment need something that will pay for itself in a short period of time, resale or salvage value is secondary.

Back in 1944 the design life of tractors was to be obsolete in about ten years and worn out in 20 years. There is a tradeoff between durability and economy. If equipment could not pay for itself within ten years or more often within five years, it would not sell.

Not many if any at all. First they will not make that many since one tractor will do the work of 30 or more 70 year old tractors. Second, its a computer. Computers and their related applications are obsolete and non-functional after a relatively short time. Anybody have an operating Commador or Apple II in operating order?

The electric tractor is also reliant on GPS satellite guidance systems. Considering that JD wont support the early GPS guidance systems that they produced, odds of this tractor functioning in even 30 years time are slim.

Exactly. In 78 years nobody on this board will be alive so who cares. There is room for an autonomous tractor on this farm when the technology gets perfected. It took time to get GPS and auto steer to get figured out and fine tuned . The technology is so good now you can add it to a 4020. I even read an article about someone adding it to a JD A just for demo purposes. I foresee in the future somebody offering a autonomous kit for older tractors. There are even a few tech savvy farmers that have made one themselves.

Tony, my son works for Microsoft and he collects old computers and restores them to operating condition - same as we do with old cars and tractors. The difference is they cost lots less and take up a lot less room plus he makes money on every one he does.

"JD wont support the early GPS guidance systems that they produced"

Is that a policy of DEERE, or have the signal parameters supplied by others changed, forcing the older units into obsolescence?

Never thought about our kids generation restoring old computers. Guess what ever your passion is I see as a good thing.
