O.T., workplace safety

Lots of those built on the prairies in grain country. Any idea where this one is? My geography nut is asking!

A HUGE amount of lumber. They are likely 2 x 6's laminated/nailed. There are hundreds of them on the prairies. The oldest one in Canada was just being dismantled for the wood, caught fire and was gone in 1 hour (dry wood).

Those old elevators (woodhouse we called them) were incredibly tough. When they took the one down here in town, a CAT pulled out one entire lower side thinking it would topple over. It started to tip, then settled at an angle and stopped solid. They kept hitting it with a big track hoe on the uphill side and finally it went. Still took them days to tear it apart to haul off. There are a few around yet and, if the rot didn't get into the bottom layers of wood, still solid as the day they were built.

Heres one built on a local farm. The pulley at the top of the door runs the grain leg that feeds five bins upstairs which is built with laminated 2x4. The bottom is 2 inch oak joists and deck. Lower walls are 4x4 Tamack. We are taking the cupola off for the move to Junkshow. Too good, too close not to save.

There is a tipping floor that empties the grain box. The lone shaft drives a chain to the sprocket at the top of the grain leg in the cupola.

The tipping floor is tipped by a rack and pinion driven by chain from a hand wheel.

This Grain Elevator is located at Mile 0 of the Alcan / Alaska Highway in Dawson Creek British Columbia Canada.

The Elevator was moved and refurbished as a Tourist information site and the home of local Art works.

Shortly after Peril Harbour was bombed, the USA sent Engineering Troops to Dawson Creek to commence the construction of the infrastructure from Dawson Creek to Alaska. Road, Bridges, Telegraph, Airports, etc.

The Rail arrived in Dawson Creek Canada in 1930..

The Elevator is visible in the Black & White pic. with the USA Army Soldiers at Rail .

My Father was 14 Yeras of age when the pic was taken with the USA Soldiers..
My Mother-in-law was born not far from the site of the USA Army soldiers in 1920. She passed away after turning 100 years of age...
As a young boy, I would ride with my Uncle in his 1947 Ford three ton to drop off Grain at this elevator..

would say they were built in form of scaffolding to be cut off flush at the finish of the building process.

This one sits west of St. Cloud near Albany. The mechanical parts are from the R. R. Howell Co. Minneapolis. One of our YTs said Howell was bought by S-M Enterprises in Moorhead. They still do grain equipment.

Do you recall what size engine they powered it with?

State fire Marshall in Iowa used an old wooden elevator to demonstrate how to fight a fire in a high rise building in a city.
He started a fire at the bottom and let it get going good with flames almost to the top. Had the fireman present where to shoot the water, fire almost went out, let it go again, same thing flame almost to the top. Had several fire trucks hauling water to the trucks pumping the water. Finally after demonstration was over he let it burn, didn't take long. Fire departments from all over Iowa came to observe and fight the fire, quite a show.
