Sad 4020s--

Son borrowed my trailer the other day and had to show me what he bought--Two of the most beat up 4020s I have ever seen. Ran them until they died and let them sit out in the weather. A cattle feeder had them-one has a Deere 260 loader and the other a Deere 148, both match the condition of the 4020 they were on. He and his buddy have the 4020s torn apart--they needed axle housings for the pulling tractors they are building. I can't believe how bad some people treat their equipment. They were CHEAP...Tee

Proud as a peacock!!

It is amazing to see how some people don't fix things and even more amazing to see how some people try to fix things. Good way to pick up some pricey parts cheap! That back one looks like it has an Oliver fender on it??

GFs DAD was like that. Ran them until they didn't start or run. He's a real nice guy and sharp mentally, but I don't think fixing things happened very much.

That is what we thought too about the fenders. The 260 loader came down when going down the road--tore up the cylinders and the mounts. High $$$ loader-we are going to fix it.

The way some people can beat their tractors and equipment is amazing. I guess it must not of been very hard to pay for .

The 4020 I bought when I started farming was a little bit that way. It was advertised for $4500 and dad knew the owner. When I went to look at it he was disking with it. No hood and only one fender and missing 3 point. He had taken the hood off a year before to fix something and never bothered to put it back on. The fender who knows why with that. I bought it for a good bit less than his asking price. That was 1991. Here it is today. Tom

Tee, 2 summers while I was in high school I baled hay for a farmer who lived about 10 miles away. He had 2 4010 diesels. Not a straight piece of tin on either of them, hoods missing, fenders gone, shields and screens tore (if there at all) Made me almost cry, as I was raised to take care of my equipment. They ran, but I really felt bad for them.

I wouldn't be so hard on the people who have to run their tractors hard 365 days a year. Most people's get more vacation time than use. Back when I was working on them I dreaded seeing a dairy tractor come in. It was always a clutch because they couldn't do without it easy for the minor stuff. We would fix everything we could while waiting on parts but once the clutch was in it was gone. Small dairy farms with only a couple 4020's didn't have the luxury of time or extra equipment they needed. The tractors were always worn out because they were used all the time!

Ive farmed and ranched for forty five years. Tractors get used everyday around here Some people just dont take care of stuff.

It's always amazed me how one person can have a shed full of 30 year old equipment that looks almost as good as the day it was new, and the next guy's stuff might be only half that old, yet it's all dented up and beat to hell, and looks like it's been through an earthquake!

Growing up dad always said cash grain farmers are only employed for half the year, livestock farmers have year-a-round full time employment.

So do cash grain/livestock farmers have a year and half of employment crammed into one year. We cant be the only ones on ytmag that farm and ranch.

There are 2 neighboring dairy farms along
a road near me that I pass sometimes. It's
exactly like you describe, night and day
difference in equipment condition and just
the general looks of the place.

I always wonder at that too. One farm
seemingly doesn't own a hood for any
tractor, junk piled up, buildings in
disrepair. Just up the road the other
place is neat as a pin.

For some people tractors are tools to get a job done. They have better things to do with their time to polish paint and better things to spend their money on than fixing or replacing anything that is not necessary to get that job done.

If the outside is rough on a tractor the inside probably is not any better.
