A little off subject, BUT If I get a dog that is the RUNT of the litter will it be a
bit smaller/shorter than the rest of the litter ??? By the way it will ride on the
Tractor with me !! LOL Jim in N.M.

My son is on his 2nd runt dog. This one is just a young puppy. His first one turned out to be huge. Probably depends on the breed.

Sometimes the runt of the litter might have some developmental issues that dont show up until adulthood.

May or may not be important.

Years ago, we got a puppy for my wife. Might as well call it a rescue; the poor thing was the runt and probably weaned too early, as well. The people we got her from were probably going to put her down if we didn't take her.

When young, that terrier mix could jump 4 feet high from standing still. Oodles of energy. As she aged, that energy faded quickly; by the time she was 10, she resembled nothing more than a dust mop.

That was the sweetest, most loving dog we ever owned, but she was, as the saying goes, dumber than a box of rocks. She couldn't get out of her own way, was terrified of almost everything, and, when she somehow accidentally got off her lead, would cower down and whimper until somebody put her back on it.

We loved that dog, and she loved us, but, were she human, she would have been profoundly mentally retarded. That mattered to us not one tiny bit!

Speaking of runts.

When I worked for an insurance company, we had a female receptionist who was a little bit of a thing, barely 5' tall, if that. We called her 'The Runt', and she answered to it.

I'd think it would be likely to stay a bit smaller... but not sure.

I am the runt of the litter... and ended up substantially shorter than all my siblings. LOL

Probably but not guaranteed.

I would be concerned as others mention if it would have some issues with how it processes its environment. Might be scared a lot, or otherwise not fit in as well as you want.

Jim, I've had CATS that would ride in the cab with me, not just one but several. Shoot a cottontail, kick the cat out of the cab and they would drag that rabbit back home! 1066 Farmall and 4020 John Deere. Not nice cab's either, both were the Year-a Round's

It was quieter outside next to them than in them.

I'm on my second runt. First one born with only one eye, smaller and had a breathing issue. None of the above bothered her at all. She was smart, overactive and a sweetheart. I still miss her. The second is sitting in my lap, may have been euthanized if we didn't take her. Crooked hide legs, pretty bad heart murmur, and a skin condition that was cured by four dips/trips to the vet. She can't hike all day but loves to be with us, sit in our laps whenever she can. Very smart, very cute, very friendly, a real sweetheart.

We got the runt from a litter of basset hounds. He turned out to be the biggest. Longer and heavier boned than all his siblings. Weighed in at close to 100 lbs and not overweight. When he stood on back legs he was almost as tall as me at 6ft.

Almost always got the runt or we kept the runt of the litter. I think we always went for the under dog and needed extra love.
