Massey Ferguson 35

I have a 1963 Massey 35. The differential is locked in a posi-trac position. It doesn't have a foot pedal for differential lock. I tried hitting the brakes while driving forward and backward but it still is locked in. Any other ideas to get it freed up?

I don't think they made such a thing as a limited slip differential. Sounds like you have some internal problems - probably some froze up bearings in the differential gears. That is what it sounds like to me.

Lloyd welcome to YT! Now I am an IH guy but on the
farm growing up we sort of inherited a 65 which I
wouldnt say is the big brother to a 35. It had the
differential lock actuated by a bar type pedal behind
your right foot. And as the other gentleman said it
would occasionally stick down. If a quick alternating
jab on the two brake pedals did not pop it back up you
would have to grab it as said. I may be off base here
but I do not think a tractor was ever equipped with a
..auto.. locking style differential. But yes they have a
differential that allows one wheel to spin if traction is
lost and for different wheel speeds in turns. My guess
is if this tractor does not have a manually applied
differential lock and operated normally before and now
the rear wheels seem to be locked together then
something has broke and gotten jammed in the
differential. I know they have a plate you can pull to
look in but not sure if you can see the differential
through there. There is also a Massey brand specific
topic section on here if you want to post this over
there. See link.

I own, operate and have performed all Maintenace on my MF 35 since it was purchased new in 1963 by my parents.6000 +
hours.

When I retired, I was asked for some thought on a MF 35 Differential POSSIBLE problem. The owner did not hear what he
wanted to hear!

Not my Tractor......but...

Finally, there was a bang...a crash... a thud, and a sudden stoppage of movement. Cap Screws /Bolts as per picture
had finaly failed.

I explained to him as to how to remove the LEFT SIDE AXEL Housing.......

It's your Tractor Sir, all the best in your decisions...
The exploded view from the parts book does NOT show the DIFFERENTIAL LOCK..

Some tractors did not have the diff lock option. I have seen the ring gear come loose from the diff before at the dealer I worked for years ago. I'd pull the left axle
housing and see what is loose inside, hopefully there's not a lot of damage YET...

That MF 35 should be same as the TO35 without differential lock and I would think it would be same as the TO30 that never had a differential lock and I do know the TO30 gears are the same as the 2N Ford as we had that happen 40+ years ago that a single tooth broke off of I think it was the spider gear and wedged in to where the other differential gear Would not let things turn. Would just slide front wheels and not turn. Dad went to local Ferguson Dealer that he knew from School and was going to get him to fix it. Said no use in me doing that when you can do it. Simple pull off left wheel and axle as one piece and the differential spider will lift right out.. He thought he was going to have a good set of gears untill he looked at them and said no good, neither Dad or I thought they looked that bad. Toud us where there was a tractor salvage and what they come up with looked like btand new. After got them was less than a half a day till it was operating again. And we just had a block and tackle to remover and replace the loaded wheel-tire.
