Ford 860 steering arm removal

Have been unable to get a puller behind arms for removal. I have a 800 ford repair manual but it doesn't cover this. Looks to me that maybe if I back the backlash adjuster bolt way out maybe it will give me some clearance or just unbolt the cover. Any idea what oil or grease to use? I am thinking 00 type grease. Also puller type. I need to replace leaking steering shaft seals, this is a manual steer tractor, Thanks

I usually back the nut off, but leave it on to protect the threads.

Put a reasonable amount of heat on the arm, smoking and paint burning but not glowing.

Use a back up hammer on one side, hit it hard on the opposite side, usually it will pop loose. A pry bar underneath if you have a helper.

Yes, I like 00 grease in them. Stays in better than oil with less than perfect seals and shaft surfaces.

there is a grease for steering boxes. its not oil. its called steering box grease its in a tube. just squeeze it in. a very thin grease it is.

You must have thought the method Dean suggested in your other post and that I explained was to rough, see link. I admit I have no idea how difficult it is to access this thing and swing a hammer at it. And I realize it is a two man task. I would rather not heat up steering or suspension parts however that mainly applies to automotive applications where the speed is faster and people can get hurt so loose lives. But if you have to you have to. If you have an Oreilly or Auto Zone near you, try to rent an automotive pitman arm puller. They have thinner jaws that may help with your problem. You basically buy the tool with a credit card and when you return it the credit you back.
