Power Steering for John Deere A

Standard low-cost replacement power steering pump would come from a GM 3/4 ton pickup.
The high-concept option (extra points for style) would be to use the combination generator - power steering pump from a 1950-1960's Cadillac.

If you can a Char-Lynn power steering unit off an old A or 60 John Deere they where a good reliable
unit..

My dad put some char lynn kits on some tractors in the 70's... both still function well. One finger power steering, even with heavy front loads like a 4 row cultivator.

I don't understand the need for power steering on those old Letter series A,B,G, models the engine is just in front of the rearend No front end weight to them. Even with a wide front on. I can see though not to much the use on the Oliver,IH, and some of those models as the engine is out front farther. If greased regularly a baby can steer an A,B,G models by himself as they are.No I have not had to thankfully work one all day but have driven and loaded them on trailers and driven them around some with little effort to steer.

Some will steer harder than others. And then if you have a loader, cultivators or a picker they do get very hard to steer. And I have ran 4 row cultivators and mounted pickers on them. And some Farmalls I understand steer way harder than others. Our Farmal H steered easier than our JD's and a neighbor complained his Farmal H steered way hard.

Oh I do remember the sore shoulder days cultivating with a 51 A and front mounted four row cultivator. The first few days were not long days. Took a few days for the arms and shoulders to get built up. Otherwise it wasn't all that bad. Planting with the A didn't seem to bother the arms. I think the reason for the tough steering with the cultivator was the tractor pushing the cultivator a little sideways with every steering correction but the cultivator tried to push the steering back straight.
