My son bought a mulcher head for his trackhoe in Oklahoma City OK and we are going to get it for him. We will be going to Des Moines Iowa and then heading southwest. The return trip we need to go up to Lincoln NE to get a combine part. Any good salvage yards we will be close to or other tourist attraction me and the wife might enjoy. Thanks Tom

Orphan Train Museum at Concordia Kansas is a brief stop that's pretty economical and quite interesting about a rather dark time in American history when orphans were sent west from the cities in the east. On the west side of the courthouse at Concordia is a huge marble supported by a jet of water. Just north of Concordia is remnants of Camp Concordia that was a German POW camp during WW2.

At Hutchinson Kansas is the Underground salt mine museum that will take about a half day but very interesting. Also at Hutchinson is the Cosmosphere. It is a museum largely about the rocket/space race and cold war after WW2 and up through man landing on the moon. One could likely kill a half day there as well. Hutchinson is also the home of the KS State Fair and the campground there is quite nice if you opt to visit Hutch.

Further North in Abilene KS is the Eisenhower museum and library. Across the street is the Greyhound Hall of Fame and the Abilene and Smokey Valley tourist Railroad and Old Abilene town.

Goin north into Nebraska, near Fairbury is Rock Creek State Historical Park. This is where the Oregon Trail and Pony Express both crossed Rock Creek and also where Wild Bill Hickok began his gunfighting career killing the owner of Pony Express station that is restored there. Nice campground there as well.

A little bit NW of Beatrice is Homestead National Historical Park where Daniel Freeman claimed the first 160 acres after the Homestead Act was enacted.

The air museum between Lincoln and Omaha as mentioned by others is very good too.

Kansas Museme of History in Topeka (North West edge) is a good place to stop and look around if you've never been there before. Alot to see, mostly all inside. If you like musemes.
Stauffer salvage (older tractors) is outside of Holton (Mayeta) Ks. Good place to call ahead/pick something up if your needing something.
There is an Oklahoma City bombing memorial to see in Oklahoma City. A memorial of those lost in the bombing. I've never been there, but have heard it is really something to see.
There's a really good western wear store in Lincoln Ne. called The Fort. If you are in need of any western wear. They have a branch store (I think) outside of Omaha someplace. And maybe outside of St. Joe. Not sure if they are as good of stores as thier Lincoln location. I've never been to any of their branch stores.

I might re-post if some other places come to mind.

There is an air museum in Wichita just across the fence South off the air base. Small planes are inside and the huge ones are outside.

Big Bruttis is in southeast Kansas some place. A HUGE non operational steam shovel once used for digging coal. Haven't seen it myself, but brother did and said it is quit massive.

ADB already mentioned Colfax Tractor. I dont know where you are from or the route you are taking, but east of that on I-80 is Kinze manufacturing and he has a museum. That is in Williamsburg, IA.

You indicated that you are coming to Lincoln, NE. University of Nebraska tractor test on the East campus is where all tractors are tested, there's a museum in the building where the original tests were conducted.

Should you be interested in Automotive things, the Museum of American Speed is on Speedway Motors campus on the west side of Lincoln. It is the #1 attraction on Travel Advisor. 120 race cars, show cars, pedal cars, lunch pails, just goes on and on. Opens at noon, closes at 4:30 if you are interested, can't see it all in one day.
