Hi guys i picked up an old gravely 10a that has a locked up engine ( gravely 14-g engine) And I was wondering if there are other engins that would mount right up? Or if any one has one for sale?!?

I'm assuming that you have a Gravely Commercial 10A that was made in the early 1970's. Prior the Commerical 10, all the two wheel tractors used a Gravely Engine. The first switch was the Model 10 which used a 10 hp Kohler engine. Replacing the Gravely engine which ran at about 2800 rpm with a 3600 rpm engine worked, but it took someone young and nimble to keep up with the ground speed. The next model was the 10A with a change in gear ratios to accommodate the higher rpm engine. They also made a Commercial 12 with a 12 hp Kohler engine.

I'm assuming that you have a Kohler K241 10hp engine with a spec number of 47232B. My memory isn't so great these days, but I recall that the crankshaft was unique to the Gravely application. Later (but similar) Gravely models used the Kohler Magnum series engines. I believe that Gravely also made a few models that used other brand engines.

Some years back a fair number of people converted the older Gravely tractors to more modern engines. Adapter kits were required. I recall that a fellow named Bruce Guthrie made them.

Where are you located? I have a model 10A that has been sitting for years with what I believe to be an ignition problem. My engine used an early trigger switch ignition system (an early electronic ignition). Replacement parts are priced like gold, so I just parked it.

Yes i have a commercial 10 a the engine tag says gravely but it looks like a kohler. I am located near Dayton Ohio

I think that Richards Lawn and Garden in PA is one of the best respected dealers for old time Gravely parts. They may be able to provide you with some information.

I did some more Google research. It appears that Bruce Guthrie has retired. There is now a Facebook group devoted to repowering old Gravely tractors.

Gravely Parts

It is a Kohler engine, made for Gravely. It uses a special Crankshaft unique to that application only (walk behind gravely tractors)
The crank is machined to accept the original drive gears that mesh into a planetary gear set and pilot bushing in the transmission.

When i pulled the spark plug I could see piles of rust setting on the piston... I do indeed plan on opening it up i just wanted to see all my options!
