I joined the Navy on that date. Right off Dad's farm. What a shock. I wasn't prepared what for what I was getting into. After a while I was getting the hang of things. I was 22 when I went in. I don't know why I wasn't drafted into the army. If I had, I Probably would have ended up in Vietnam. Although I did spend a short time there. Mom told me I got my draft notice when I was in boot camp. I was in aviation, and was only on a ship for a month, out of four years. The rest of the time it was just about like a civilian job. I was an aircraft engine mechanic. Go to work in the morning, or the night shift. Every 4 days we had to stay on the base, and one weekend a month. I got to see a several different countries. What an adventure. Stan

i am not sure the exact date, but my uncle joined the navy in 1965, and served on the USS Perry

I was an 'Airdale' in the Marine Corps, and between deployments on aircraft carriers I probably acquired more sea duty than a lot of sailors.
 
What is an Airdale Sailor? Is that the flight deck crew, aircraft maintenance crew, or something else?
 
The Navy has ships, and planes. The way I see it is, if you are attached to an aircraft unit, you are an airdale what ever your job. Stan

Interesting. I went into the Army on March 17,1969 and did spend time in Vietnam.
