706 Farmall Gas Tractor

I have a 1964 706 with a 263 gas engine. My question is when I shift the T/A. I hear what might be a clunk type noise real quickly and then nothing else. Is that normal? Also, When the engine stops, I do not have steering very long or brakes?

I have two 706's. A gas and a diesel. Auger and chore tractors now. I can't necessarily remember a clunk noise when shifting the TA, but that just maybe a characteristic of your tractor. If the TA holds in both high and low range I would say just go with it. Probably not much you can do without splitting the tractor to fix a clunk noise that may not be a problem anyway. The labor to split the tractor is as much as a rebuilt TA. Keep running it until it doesn't move. The clunk might not even be the TA. Could be something worn in the drive train shows up when the TA is shifted. One of my 706's I use only in low range as high range slips. Something internally is leaking when in high range, probably the TA. I might split it someday, but for what I use it for low range is just fine. On the steering and brakes, yes, they both go to manual steering and brakes as soon as the engine shuts off. You should still be able to manually steer the front wheels. It will be hard and slow. The brakes also have no power assist provided by hydraulic pressure, but here again you can pump them up with your foot and have brakes as a safety feature. If someone has modified the multi control valve (MCV) by taking the little plastic check ball or plug out then the brakes probably will not pump up. Most all tractors have no power steering and brakes when the engine shuts down.

The TA is not to be used for slowing down like to turn in the driveway. It is used to give the engine a reprieve under load like pulling and you need more engine and less speed it will drop back under load. If using it to slow down with might be most of the problem.
