Question on abnormal use of a disc

I have an 8ft wheel disc I pull with my D15. I want to remove one side front and rear disc gangs to make it a 4ft disc to prepare a
garden spot. Will it work ok for this non standard use? If it will pile up the dirt to one side is there a way to know which side
it will put the pile? My buddy says it will ridge, but I can put the ridge against a fence and plant beans and such so thats not a
deal breaker. Thoughts from the guys that know more than me?

If you intend to just unbolt the front and rear gangs from one side and have all your draft load focus coming the remaining gangs on the opposite side I doubt it will work to well. The side with the gangs will drag back and cause the disk frame to pull at an angle. If the tillage of your garden can be completed in straight runs you may be able to chain the disk to the tractor at an angle on the side with the gangs remaining so that it pulls straight. As in you will run the chain from that side to a point on the tractor. You are creating an offset disk. Properly manufactured offset disk ..see link.. are know to be a heavy tillage tools. They penetrate deeper than a disk-harrow and take probably a third more horsepower per foot than a disk harrow.

Removing one complete side of a disk would make it pull to one side unless the hitch was re-positioned to the new center. You could remove the outside blades from all four gangs, but that would be a lot of work for not much gain, and might greatly reduce the sale value of your disk.

I would buy or rent a rototiller or hire someone to till your garden.

Sell your Wheel disc, and purchase one of these. 3pt. there are used small implements in your area for sure. A bit of searching should turn up a solution. Jim

A One Way plow is essentially 1/2 a standard tandem disc. It pulls straight since the towbar is centered on the plow and you set it up so that the front and rear gangs exert equal force on the soil. Taking one side off your tandem disc will do as was mentioned, pull sideways because the towbar is to one side of the resistance, not centered.
