if you had a choice between these two tractors, similar shape,
which one would you choose? i think both are similar horsepower.
the Farmall has a t/a, so the shift on the go is a nice feature,

but which do you like?
thanks

I am a Farmall type guy, but this case is an absolute tie. I do love fast hitch implements. Olivers are smooth tractors with good reliability. Which ever has the best tires!! Jim

We are Oliver people, but I have a lot of respect for the 560. What are your plans for the tractor? That might sway the decision. Also a better description of the tractors, gas / diesel, wide or narrow front, tire condition, hydraulics, etc.

I like IH tractors, but with these two models, the 880 Oliver would be my first pick.

Both have similar features, Hi/Low shift on the go option, for me I'd vote the 560. What I'm not a fan of is the splash oiling system the Oliver used for the rods. The oil pump only fed the mains on the early Oliver/Waukesha engines. Also prefer the Stanadyne/Roosa fuel system the 560 came with over the American Bosch PSB pump that most Olivers had. The very late Oliver 550, 770, and 880 did get the Roosa pump though.

Guess my Oliver dealer told me wrong. My books show the early four main blocks used the low pressure vane oil pump that fed the mains only on both gas and diesel engines. The later seven main engines used the higher pressure gear oil pump that fed both mains and rods.

880 had the oil spurt rod bearings. Only some/most 4-digits had pressure lubed rods, and most if not all were 7-main engines.

I have a 560 diesel since 1975
I will never give it up . Love it
A 770 was traded in for it in Waterford ,Pa. The documents say in owner manual.
Got good power with 7900 hours on clock. I pull a twelve foot jd foot disc , heavy duty ihc trailer 3-16 plows in hard clay
Starts fast cold or warm weather .
Its a very heavy duty tractor .
Yep it has issues
Its a north south tractor , get on it and go with wide front dont like to make a lot of maneuver
Its hard to get on if you have the deluxe seat. Also on if you dont have the pto shied. And fenders are mount close.
Its even harder to get on with the added after market 3 point hitch ,we add foot pads to climb
First gear is close left leg if your tall like me to ,push in clutch.
Your need s are different than mine but you want a work horse ,cant go wrong with a 560
Dont think your not going to put a lot of money into an older tractor after you buy it .
Inspection is critical ,Drive it hard ,hard brakes ,test Clutch , warm it up and listen ,look in radiator for oil on surface of cool enemy or rust
If all the gauges are work ing the tractor is taken care of ,
Dont buy a 560 that they use starting fluid to start ,

What "rearend problem?" That's ancient history.

60 years later an Oliver 880 has just as good a chance of having the rear end blow up as a 560. It's called wear and tear.

As for which I'd choose, I'm torn. We had a 560 when I was a kid, and I wouldn't mind having another one. On the other hand the 880 is a cool looking tractor, not nearly as common and I wouldn't mind having one of those either.

Here's my vote

Good afternoon from the west central Mo lucky snow (non-event)! hopefully,
28 and cloudy at moment...
I will weigh in here, growing up JD 60 and 4320, neighbors had IH, and had a 560 to plant cultivate with.
they had bigger and others. That thing always looked cumbersome to get on like others have said, poor clutch/shifter etc.
However after marriage and Father in law's influence we have became an Oliver family, he has a 62' 880 Diesel that was his
main workhorse until getting his first 105White. He loves his 53' 88 Diesel more than the 880. I have since found and started on a 58' 880 Diesel WF, power booster, no p/steering, (does have power traction hitch) project tractor, Easier to get on, however now finding parts is starting to weigh on the mental state. Yes, we are spending money to bring it back to usability, but in pondering, let me leave you with these thoughts, my kids are 17,14,11. by the time they are out of college, will there be parts to keep these engineering marvels (regardless of iron color), from becoming relics in the museum? I will try to get some pics on here, and thanks to several here on YTmag for helping answer my Oliver questions too! MR J, and Mr Nick, and others.... Wes, aka GG

I wouldn't want either one of them, but that is just me. The rear and of a 560 should have been rebuilt by the dealer in the 60s, the serial tag will have been stamped to show it. The last one on the place had a diamond stamped in it.
