GRINDING FRAME NEAR GAS LINE

I am working on my 48 and am installing dual leaf springs. I need to grind a little bit off frame for spring hanger. The fuel line is about 3 away. Would I be better to remove tank and line or cover line with something. Sure don't want a fire on a $84,000. 48 ford Conv. Thanks

Three inches is not really close unless you think it's in an awkward place that the grinder might get away from you.

I would not be too concerned. Careful but not worried about it. Leaks are the danger.

Always a good idea to know where the extinguisher is!

I have a couple moving blanket from HF. I'll wet one tomorrow. I keep one in each car incase I need to get under a car on the road, thanks for info

Rubber line or steel? Any way have a good fire extinguisher handy, I have both dry chem and CO2 in shop. joe

The best heat shield I have found is an old license plate, easy to bend around where you need it.

In tight quarters, I have wetted paper towels, wrapped them around the line, then secured a piece of heavier steel over any area where the grinder wheel might nip at the line.

The reason I would use heavier steel (small angle or a heavy tubing, etc) is because I would not want to take any chances on the grinder jumping and going through a thinner metal, such as flashing, tin cans, or even a license plate.

When working around fuel lines, I never take ANY chances. I always expect the worst to happen, because if I don't, then it usually does. And usually if I go to such extremes for protection, then I finish the job without so much as a tiny nick. For some reason, that's just how it has seemed to work with me my whole life.

If you are afraid that the line is leaking you need to replace it or empty the system before doing any work that will generate a spark or flame. If you are confident in the integrity of the system, go ahead and direct all the sparks you want on the line. Sparks will not eat through the line and heat will not ignite gasoline. it takes a spark or flame.

With out seeing it , vapors are bad ,cant see them , they hide on ya , use your best judgement . Use the safe approach. Not going to take that much longer to do.
