Home security systems help

Neighbors have recently experienced some thieving issues lately & I would like to install something to be able to catch any culprits in the act. I have a 1/4 mile driveway & would like something to catch activity coming down my driveway along with something at the house to catch pictures or record. Problem that I have is I have dogs that run around all day & 3 daughters who are in & out with school/sports & FFA/4H activities. I would like to get phone notifications when there is movement to catch any wrong-doing as it happens & trying to figure out the best options for me. Would anybody on here have any suggestions or input of what to get or consider from their experiences? Thanks!

We have 3 ring cameras outside that send us an alert via smartphone and we can see what triggered it. Works great.
It also sends an alert when a dog, cat, skunk, deer or big bird flies by 24/7. That can be a BPITA at midnight.

You have a great deturnant already, dogs running around helps run off evil doers. My UPS driver just throws the package out the door when one of the dogs are around. And all they want is a head scratch.

We have one of these for the driveway. Notifies us of every vehicle that comes in the drive, every deer, every bird that lands on the post, every cat on the ground.

Add to that a camera system and security recorder and you'll be set.

Everyone's security needs are different, and while our cameras are far out of date (NOT wireless), it serves our needs well. Look on Amazon for security camera systems that have good ratings. Research about such systems (from more than just Amazon!) and figure out what you need. Decide the areas you wish to have covered; just the driveway and walking areas? Entrances to buildings? Everything??

This should be a personal matter, and you should NOT give details of your system online. Tales is likely OK as those posts have a limited lifespan and do not link to search engines, but avoid most any other forum.

I have six cameras at my non residence farm building. I can monitor them live with my I phone. They show a reading when there is movement, but they are on for 4 years now with very little issues. I can go back 10 days and monitor each one. No notifications, but great resolution. I send out photos to people who visit, friends, etc. Word is out that I got good cameras
E mail me if you want more info

Another vote for ring. It records and keeps video, and you can access the video when needed.

The camera can be set for pets, and also target a small area of interest, wrather then large area,

Guido.

I have the Ring security system, not just the doorbell. Monitoring (they call 911 / fire) and video storage are reasonably priced. I have cameras all over to include the barn. Its nice to be able to check on things from your phone wherever you are.

Some cameras I have silenced but the driveway camera gives me notifications on my phone; working just like a driveway alarm.

Its not especially cheap to buy the whole hardware kit but thats true for all the systems when you start adding in cameras.

Why not use what all the youtube farmers use? Simplisafe!

Frankly a security system isn't going to do you any good. Even if you have proof you're going to get told that it's your fault for leaving things out where they could be seen, your fault for having valuable items that were just begging to be stolen. They will let the thieves go, usually with what they stole, and refuse to prosecute. Accuse you of violating their privacy. If you give them any lip, you'll be the one to end up in handcuffs in the back of the car. You're better off just letting them take what they want and pretending you didn't see anything.

Really, worst the thieves will get is a slap on the wrist. It won't reform them. They won't stop because they know there's nothing the law can do to them that will really affect them. Might have to cancel that hot date to make a court appearance, but that's a small price to pay.

What do you do? Is any material item worth a man's life? Because that's the only way to stop it. Lock them up and throw away the key, or... Then you're spending millions of taxpayer dollars to detain someone who stole $100 worth of scrap metal for the rest of their lives, or...

My question to all the reply's is: Has anyone caught a thief and got a conviction with this equipment. Several years ago, my brother in Sacramento CA had someone shooting out the front windows of his house with a BB gun. Set up cameras and had clear video of 2 19/20 year olds' doing it from across the street (subdivision). Gave it to the police and all he got was aggravated. Was told he needed to ID the people (couldn't) and even then it probably wouldn't help.

Wow barnyard. You just invited everyone to come to your place to take what they want.
Im glad I live in a place that first of all has low crime and second does prosecute wrong doers. I do have a security system that includes many different disciplines including recording cameras. Most
people know of 1 or 2 of things I have but no one knows everything I have. So if you survive stealing from me, you will be prosecuted. It would be a much better choice for thieves to work hard and
buy your own stuff.

we went with Simplisafe as we are not living at the farmstead and needed some monitoring beyond just motion and cameras. We also have a couple temperature sensors to monitor and make sure the heat is working properly and any locations with risk of pipes freezing. also put in their deadbolt setup so we can set it if we need someone to go in the house and check on things they can get in and we can change the password as needed. can also monitor the smoke detectors and things as well. Watch for their deals. they often have something with 40-50% off. NOTE: for cameras most require a wifi signal at the camera. so the end of a 1/4 mile lane may not work without a signal booster somewhere along the way.

my brother just installed WYSE cameras at my folks place. no other monitoring. we'll see how that works.

I see alot of folks still use video surveillance signs with no actual cameras seems hokey but since so many people have cameras on their property now it will probably deter some.

as others mentioned it may or may not do you any good. depends on local law enforcement. of course if it IS someone you know then you're ahead of the game.

You already have better security than most places with the long driveway, many family members around at various times, and dogs. Have you considered going with a simple security system and spending the remainder of the money on some better locks, motion lights, maybe an alarm in the shop and machine shed, and take some extra care to keep expensive things inside, out of view when not being used? I would not put an alarm on the house with that many people coming and going, it will constantly be setting off and you will soon have a family revolt on your hands, LOL. Simply posting a security system sign half way down the drive with a real or dummy camera will deter the majority of opportunistic petty thieves.

You won't stop a professional, they have already targeted what they are after and will simply cut through a building sidewall rather then mess with a locked door or alarm. Someone like that already knows you and your operation well, and is likely someone you know well too.

I brought a Blink 3 cameras system from Amazon that runs off my internet and sends everything to our cell phones. Phone beeps every time one is activated with motion then you can look at what's going on with your phone. I DO NOT pay any extra monthly payment for the service. I just watched a guy on my phone pull up to my self serve sales wagon and buy a couple bags of corn while I was typing this setting in my lazy boy. You can activate it or turn it off with your phone if you or someone else is out working or doing allot of movement around your cameras.

You spoke a lot of truth there.

And (thieves that survive stealing from me) type owners will more than likely be sued for injuries or subject to retaliation.

A small country business near me was broken into and security cameras got pictures of two men hammering the front door open. Pictures were published in the local newspaper and the grandmother of one of the thieves recognized the jacket one of them was wearing as the same as the one she had just given her grandson for Christmas. Investigation revealed that, indeed, it was her grandson and his accomplice that had broken into the place and stole some new chainsaws, etc. They both went to jail.

We have VERY FEW people that ever come this far out. That said, we had a neighbor set a fire that burned half of our land, took out a building and messed up the well. It was video that kept him from getting off scott-free.

It's not the police where video will be your friend; it's in court. Law enforcement can use video to help find and ID someone but that's it. It is not their job description to do more than that. Once captured, it would then be up to the city or county attorney to prosecute, and that is where the breakdowns usually occur. Those folks are so overworked it's unbelievable!!

I wonder of the thousands and thousands of home security videos that have actually captured someone doing something illegal, how many of those scoundrels have ever really faced the wrath of the law, even if they were ID'd? For simple thefts, etc. the system doesn't have the capacity of even thinking about dealing with them in a court of law let alone look after them for a few months or longer in a facility.

Ring changed the terms of agreement. Now it appears they can view what is going on at your house
