New advertising rant

Guy posted something on marketplace 30
minutes ago, 2 hours away, but we have
been looking for this attachment for
the new Massey. Sent message, asked for
measurements to make sure it will fit.
Dude says he won't be available for 3
days!!!!! Why advertise it if you ain't
gonna be home to sell it????

I have sold a lot the last couple years. You never know what will happen. Sometimes you get no response for weeks then a flurry of activity. Sometimes it sells within the hour. I have some old ads I thought expired after six months or more, last week I got responses on two of them, still have the items but I am a long ways away from them and don't know when I will be back.

If the price is attractive, he will get it sold just fine to the first person who shows up with the right cash. If you don't tick him off, you might be first in line to buy it when he returns.

It might not be at the same location where he lives and if its a attachment for a tractor hes probably planning on moving it just once,on to the buyers vehicle.

Went through that not long ago with a lathe. Guy advertised it and I responded immediately saying I was 20 miles away with cash in hand. Heard nothing from him for hours, then got a message saying he wouldn't be in town for a week. I tell him I'm ready to make the deal now, sight unseen. Nothing back. 3 days later I get a message that so many people have responded he's changing the sale to a "best offer" instead of $300.00. Says he's doing this in the interest of being "fair"!!! Forget it pal! You put something up for sale at a price, then man up and sell it for the price you wanted!

Problem I had with this ad was the picture shows the implement sitting on a trailer in a nice neighborhood driveway. Assuming it's at his home. Responded that he was out to dinner with his family, can't call. I asked if I could buy it in the morning, response was 'wont be home for several days'

Something I'm seeing with a new generation of buyers is impatience.I don't wait days to get back to somebody, but if I place an ad in the morning,I most likely won't see the computer until that night.I had one a while back where I found a dozen messages all from the same guy,all spaced about an hour apart. He just doesn't know anyone that doesn't carry a computer around with them all day.He thought I was ignoring him,but he could have called the phone number in the ad at any time.

Bret ..... I hear ya for sure but real estate deals sometimes advertise a home at a lower-than-market value and then a bidding war starts and they get far above the original asking price, and in some cases above the true market value. Well a house is one thing, everyone knows that routine but an item for a few hundred bucks, not sure about the ethics of doing that.

Well Keith, maybe he wanted to buy your widget and to do that you have to be first with the money. Suck it up!

What I thought was funny was that he was upset because I wasn't sitting by the computer waiting for responses. He had the time to write a dozen responses by email, but not enough time to dial the phone once.I was out working, and always answer the phone. If I don't hear it I do check it a lot,and call back. The vast majority of people I deal with are great, but a handful are good entertainment.
