Sometimes things stop working at the right time

I was doing some work on my flail mower before I start mowing in month or so. The starter on my JD 401B decided to stop working. The solenoid was bad. The new solenoid will be here next week. The starter is a Delco. Looks a lot like an old chevy 6 starter. Stan

I'd go through the starter too. If it isn't too bad yet brushes and bushings may get it back into top shape.

Many of the parts are the same as automotive starters, solenoid, brushes, maybe the bushings.

They are simple and field serviceable, brushes attach with screws, no soldering, bushings can be peeled out and new ones hammered in.

Did you look at the brushes? Worn brushes can mimic a bad solenoid. If it just fell silent, no click, no motion, good chance it needs brushes.

I have switched the head and drive on Delco starters to make a repair. My MF 65 Diesel uses the a solenoid common on Chevrolet trucks.

The contacts inside the solenoid were burned. I took the starter apart the rest looked good. Stan

A few years ago I decided to work up a 3 acre field of cornstalks I often dont work up before putting the equipment away for winter.

2.5 acres into it, the crankshaft on the main farm tractor broke in half.

At least I had all winter to deal with the situation, instead of starting spring field work and losing my big tractor in the first hour!
