John Deere 720 diesel black dash

A friend of mine is trying to sell me a black dash 720 diesel but there's fuel in the crankcase and oil in the radiator and the motor is stuck he's asking $ 2000 for it was the. 720 diesel known for bad head's or you think they blew head gaskets pretty easy wondering if it's worth fixing or just part it out thanks for any advice on the 720 diesel John Deere

we have a 730 in same state sitting there [oil in coolant]. as with any old 2cyl jd; what it comes with like options determines value .ours has front weight set ;remorte hydraulis; complete 3point; jd wide front and almost new 16.9x38 radials; is that worth junk price?

Note:
In June 2017 a Neighbor asked if I would look at his JD 70 Diesel. It had a JD 720 Head.... head gasket had to be replaced.

After getting the whole story....... the head was replaced, as the original head was cracked. Replacement head had NOT been torqued, (as with a torque wrench) or re torqued!

Coolant was evident in Crankcase..

Installed new head gasket, torqued head as per JD service manual, ran engine up to 180 deg. Retorqued, checked valve clearances... all is now great.

I had owner look at the head.... VALVES are not correct height / depth in head...

It's his Tractor!

That's what I'm trying to figure out to I figured if I pay $2000 for it and put $2000 in it still hard to find a 720 diesel for $4000 and I know what I have as far as the motor goes

Here's a 70.....
Neighbour had changed the head to that of the last series 720 D...
Converted engine to straight electric stat...
White smoke started bellowing from exhaust stack....
Tractor sat abandoned for four years....
Coolant in Crankcase....fuel in crankcase..
I purchased Trcator..$200.00...came with V-4 starting engine on a crate...

It's good on head gaskets. Most of them 70 720 730 just need a new head gasket. Or a different head. Most have been turned up as far as they will go to pull them.

my thoughts are, 1500 dollars top, and that depends on the options on the tractor.
are there factory weights? 3pt hitch? fenders?

that should also figure in the price,
just an old man thought!

I would have to wonder at the price of tires why a set of near new radials was still on the tractor. Then if the tires are that good they would move the price a bit depending on whether I had anything else I could use the tires on or if I had somebody interested in them. Other wise yup still just junk price for the tractor. You never know just what kind of can of worms you will get into on non running tractors.Does not matter what color they are. For me a Deere would be an orphan to work on since I never have had any of those old 2 bangers around. Oldest Deere equipment I've been around was the 4020 series. Those that still had the 24 volt set up you can have.

Around here they will charge you for leaving the tire on when you sell for scrap. Don't matter what shape they are in.
