John Deere 435D

Hello to all.

Just getting started here so posting in General Discussion, if I should be specific to John Deere, let me know. Just trying to get a hang of it in my first post. I own seven tractors, Massey's, Case, Ford, John Deere and some other one off's. In this post I am looking at any aficionados on the JD 435D. I have owned mine since 1979 or 1980. We had a family friend who bought it new in 1962, it sat at the dealer. Nobody interested in the model. In my two county area that was represented by a dealer who had three locations, they only sold three from 1959 to 1960. Nevertheless, I am looking to have dialog with anybody as to some of the nuances or particulars regarding everything in the fitment of this model. Mine is pretty complete and high in options, less the swept back front axle, 1000 RPM PTO and power steering, it has everything listed as an option plus some extras that were not mentioned as options, ie: twin sticks on the hydraulic quadrant, pre-cleaner with glass bowl and some small items. I am not restoring but would like to get corrected a few things that have gone missing over the years. Mine is a rolling relic but it needs a few things fixed, I like everthing OEM and this one has been altered in some small details in a few places. Will elaborate if any responses come back. Anybody that is interested or can spend some time with some dialog would be appreciated.

Thanks to the forum and all affiliated.

Jess,

I was working for a John Deere dealer when the 435 came out. There were 3 or 4 sold here. The main problem we saw was they were hard to crank below 45* with no glow plugs in engine. Folks had to pull start them if it got very cold.

Jess, welcome to YT! You will find a lot of good
information on these forums. My tractor is a Farmall M,
it has been owned by someone in my extended family
since new and is still in work clothes. I dont have a
real good picture of it but here it is with my son and
grandson on it. There is a John Deere specific topic
section here as well, I will post a link to it. It will be
easy for you to find in the future once you figure
everything out. And you will find a specific topic
section for each of the brands you mentioned. A lot of
questions get asked and answered right here on
Tractor Talk. As far as posting pictures, as a protective
measure from someone posting some not so nice
pictures on what is a family friendly site picture
posting for new users usually does not open up until
you have made five posts. Looking forward to hearing
more from you!

welcome, I'm a john Deere guy to, well I like all old tractors!

do you have any pictures of your 435?
I've never been around one, but always been interested in the 435!

Stealing the thread; Good to see you back Glen! Not a surprise that a Detroit question would spur you along.....stay well!

Good to hear from you1.I read an article about the 435 in an engineering paper about the development of the 1000 RPM PTO. It mentioned the 435 was the first tractor to
offer to that as an option.

Welcome Jess:Interesting to here about your 435D ;From an old wore out Farmer, Farmed with a 435's till about 85 [had 4 dif. ones
thru the 70's & 80's] The dual Touch-O-Matic was an nice option ,used with front crop cult. [independent side to side or front to
back lift...? do you have remote hyd. cyl. valve & rear outlet. also 5 speed with live pto?.. Most options are same as 420 - 430w
Power steering same except for bigger pump & dif. lines.. Spin-out/in rear wheels was handy option..A post in JD form [ pic
helpful] will get good comments..] I have accumulated some extra options over the yrs. Ps; Hyd.valve etc.

I owned a JD435. It was 6th off the production line (Serial number was 435006 if I recall
correctly). I paid $2000 for it in the early '80's. It was my first tractor and I used on the ranch
for about 10 years. the 2-53 Detroit Diesel was a hard starter in cold weather but was a real
capable machine compared to the 2N and 9N Fords of my neighbors. It had power steering and the
Touch-O-Matic three point. I sold it when I sold the place to some apple knocker from Okanogan,WA
in 1992 for $1200 more than I paid for it with a well used 5 foot $300 Bush Hog cutter.

I never had a 435d. I had a 440 dozer with the Detroit in it. I never had a hard time starting it, unless it's motor was different. It had a plug in the intake I'd take out , squirt a little starting fluid in it and it'd take right off at 0 degrees sitting out doors. I skidded logs with most all one Winter.

As to what you asked, It does have the spin out rears and some big *!@# wheel weights on the inside of the rear wheels, the hydraulic remote plug at rear is still intact. It still has the plugs in it. The tractor does not have much of or any hard use on it. It lives in California's Central Valley just north of Bakersfield, does not get cold out here. Starts everytime, has been used as a pull tractor to a FMC Speed Sprayer in the citrus industry exclusively. It got repainted in the middle 70's where the local dealer taped off the yellow in the hood and made it look like a 1970's model with the thin yellow stripe. I have sent off to the Two Cylinder Club to see if there is anything I can learn from any archived information that Deere & Company might have on record. I do not know if it came with the larger fenders, I am curios, there are extra bolts and large washers in them four inner taps on the top of the axle. Maybe after the information comes back we will know for sure. When we bought it, it had wrapped fenders over the rears in which was common around here back then, trying to keep the bar tires from shredding branches from the trees. We went to Deere and bought some of the butterfly types and they have been on since we took over on it. We also took the water out of the front tires and put on a John Deere weight from another model. It really helped for looks as we thought the front of this model was lacking in style, mainly because of the front casting mount was exposed and it was painted yellow. Believe it or not, the Float Ride seat tracks are free and is still adjustable. It does however have a rotted torsion spring. Yes, on the live PTO and it came with the stub shaft and guard. It has the 5 speed, hour meter, and the lighting front and rear and still has the Pollak implement plug. Dont really know if it came with the horizontal muffler, it did when we bought it and we have replaced it twice, maybe the forthcoming information will tell us. Although, they claim it may take up to three months for it to arrive. It is also on the third steering wheel, I found a used one off of a 430, it was the exact same one, ours had both previously broke one of the three spokes. A few mods have been done like stabilizers on the lower links, have changed some fuel and hydraulic lines, we installed an alternator on it when we first got it, just small stuff. Battery tray rotted out and was revamped. Could use some new vinyl and seat cushions. Will send pictures when time allows if it takes me the five post. Jess,

wingnuttx has a really nice 435 that he has posted photos of in the past. Maybe if he reads
this he will post them again.

Pictures please . I have never seen a two cylinder Dubuque with the rare optional 1000rpm .

I just revisited my initial post. Sorry if it confused anyone "quoting", I said "less the swept back axle, 1000 RPM PTO and power steering." Mine does not have these items on the tractor.

Hope that clears that up. I would like to ask.

In regards to a tractor fitted with a float ride seat. I see in the owners manual that the hydraulic plugs bracket P/N AA 3754 R is attached to the rear frame of the cushioned adjustable seat (standard equipment seat) in two pictures, page 29, (publication # OM-T78-359)

I have the optional float ride seat and see nowhere of any mounting holes for this bracket. I have looked this tractor over high and low and cannot find any possible place where this bracket is to be mounted. I did state I do not know if the tractor came with the wide fenders and that I installed butterfly fenders after purchasing. Does anybody know where this bracket was mounted when a float ride seat was optioned??

Perhaps it was drilled into the fenders after it moved down the assembly process and my dealer purchased fenders did not have these holes. There are holes in the fenders but nothing lines up for that bracket. I look at every image I can find on a 435D with the float ride seat, I have never seen the bracket and the plug caps in any pictures. For that matter, there is not anything attached to the float ride seat that is shown in the operators manual either, page 10 (publication # OM-T78-359) Any thoughts, Thanks to the forum and all. Jess
