1973 Ford deck 4500 running/starting issue

Hey guys I have a 1973 Ford industrial deck 4500 backhoe . It runs
fine for an hour or so then I am having an issue with the tractor dying
out this last couple days , it almost seems like it sputters like its
running out of fuel or pulling air into the system. The tractor will not
restart now , The tank has fuel, the drain valve at the bottom of tank
spews fuels when I loosen it, the return line when its running has
flow. I left it alone yesterday and bled the filter not knowing if that had
any help but it ended up starting up . It always starts right up never
hard starts or anything usually. Doesnt smoke , Compression seems
solid . Any help would be appreciated

Sounds like theres a floater in your tank that occasionally gets sucked up against the screen on the valve. As soon as it acts like that, shut it down and pull the valve out of the tank.

You do not say if you have changed the filters, they do not really look new. I would suggest that first if you have not. This probably depends if you can look down in the fuel tank from the fill and see the outlet like you can on most IHs. My idea would be to run the fuel down to where you have a couple inches left then look in with a good flashlight to see if there is anything in there that could cause the issue as Fordfarmer suggests.

Thanks for the reply. Filters just look old , I sprayed them down with brake parts cleaner so it faded the paint. The filters were replaced very recently . I will look down in the tank, I definitely wouldnt be surprised if it was clogged . Thanks guys

IT might have flow but is it enough flow to sustain extended running. I would take the line to the engine off the tank and catch the fuel to see how fast it runs and if there is any dirt coming out. Then check flow to filters and so on till I got to the pump. If it does not run a full flow of the end of the line or fill a jar quickly it is restricted some place along that section. Is sediment bowl clean and flowing well?
