I know absolutely nothing about those old John Deere tractors, I'm a Ferguson/Massey Ferguson guy.

So, my question is ..... What does the shaft from the fan run? Is it a 90* gearbox?

Is the larger circular piece right behind the fan the water pump?

(quoted from post at 16:00:26 01/31/22) The fan is driven by gears in the governor housing via that shaft.

Really! I thought it looked like there is a pulley right behind the fan which I thought would be driven by a belt from the crank.

Okay, after looking more closely at the second picture I have a better idea of what's going on I think. That pulley I mentioned drives the generator I'd guess?

Maybe there isn't a water pump on that engine either?

Thanks.

Carlmac, those old JD two cylinders are quite different from what you and I usually deal with.
Although I did grow up on one and still own a couple.
See the round pieces on each side right in front of the rear tires?
Each of those round pieces is on the ends of the crankshaft.
The one on the right is the housing for the hand clutch.

Correct on both counts.

The cooling system is the thermo-syphon type and does not use a water pump. In later years Deere did add water pumps to their tractors.
