200 Ford 6 cylinder

I got a Ford 200 6 cylinder on a 1495 New Holland self propelled hay one and I can't get it to start up. Got good blue fire got good compression about 175 in each cylinder drained all the gas and put fresh gas in it and can't get it to start it never hits choke it and it loads up stop and smoke comes out of exhaust it was setting up a while when I got it and is hard to start but was running fine when I parked it. The only time it has tried to start is when I m advanced all the plug wires on the cap it almost ran but you could tell it was a little too advanced thanks for any advice

Plugged intake ? Dont know how long its been sitting. Critters and bugs are bad for that !

Check your ignition timing; don't trust timing marks on the front pulley, pull #1 sparkplug to set the crank to Top Dead Center following the compression stroke.

them small 6 bangers are a buggar to start when sitting just like in the versatile 400 swathers. you need a good strong battery and they take quite a bit of choke . once they fire i push the choke in 1/2 way and do it like that. and ony 1/2 throttle then when it fires lots of times you got to keep working the choke to get it going. i would conferm correct timing to the spec on the valve cover. that moving the distributor here to there is not the answer. and if that dont work give it a shot of starting fluid.

Well I ran out of things to do and it loads up when you choke it like the timing could be off been setting about a month but has always been hard to start

Explain good blue fire. The ozone determines the color, color does not mean its good. To take the doubt out you need a spark checker with an adjustable gap.

Points ignition check at 2/0, electronic 3/0. Not close at those settings are beyond.

BTW 4/0 is for GM HEI electronic ignition 3/4" gap

Woulf that Ford 200 6 cylinder engine be the same as the 200 engine used in the cars in the 60's to 80's time span?

It never hits means never fires like it is
trying to start and with choke pulled out
it loads up like it is out of time and
stalls the starter. Clear as mud? That's
the best way I can describe it. I thought
last night about the timing chain that
might be the problem?

I always heard the spark needs to be blue.
I am going to check the timing chain I
forgot about these engines having one

I think the 1960 Falcon introduction came with a little 185 and my friend had one with 3 on the tree, 2 door sedan and got the expected 30 MPG. A year or two later they upped it to 200 to compensate for all the crap they started adding (opinion) to the little perfect economy car as it was.

I can't believe Iacocca put the Mustang V8 engine and shell on that chassis...............

I don't go by hearsay I prove it... A bad set of points, condenser are coil all will produce blue spark and a no start : (...

Anyone that would wonder off and look elsewhere with out confirming good spark deserves to chase their tail.

well i might of found the problem the timing chain is wore out and I got one ordered that should fix the problem fingers crossed

Started as a 144 1n 1960, went to a 170 and then in 1965 they made a 200 available which became the base engine in the Mustang. The big difference, the 200 had 7 main brngs instead of 4. They did use the industrial version of the 200 on all kinds of equipment. Tough little engine.

That timing chain should help it start better.

Another thing I have started doing is to replace every spark plug that I own with NGK, I have had so many faulty new Champion and AC/Delco and Autolite plugs. Of course, all made in China now...NGK may be too but at least they have a QC system.
