4020 Power Steering Issue

I've had to replace hydraulic pump. After getting that done I find steering to the left is very difficult to impossible. Spent a good deal of timer trying to bleed air from the system (naturally the bleeder screw was frozen in place, finally got that freed up) Anybody have an idea how I got here and how I resolve the issue.

Just to clarify the pump you replaced was the main
hydraulic pump up front run by the crank? The unit
below the steering wheel is also referred to as a hand
pump, so which one is it? If you changed the main
pump it sounds to me like you got some crud in the
line and it made its way into the steering system. If it
was the steering pump then it sounds like it is probably
defective.

I'm not trying to be rude but the replies you get on this thread will probably be very close to the replies you received on Thursday.

Have you checked hyd stand-by pressure after you recently installed a hyd pump?? As I previously stated hyd stand-by pressure should be 2250 psi.

Yes, replaced the main hydraulic pump (under fuel tank and radiator). Had to tow tractor about 2-3 miles (without any power steering) to get to shop.

Do you suppose that's when air/obstruction got into system? Or was it in re-assembly?

Yeah, I'm old, trying to figure out new technology. My first effort (Thursday) I think wound up got poked into the middle some other discussion.

I'm still trying to find that one!

Yeah, I did use "Tow" position. :) OK, I'll be checking the pressure reading.

BTW, the lift arms appear to be working normally, though I haven't tried 'em with any load on 'em.

If 3 pt raises by hyd pressure stand-by should be above 1700 psi provided pressure control valve is functioning correctly. I still suggest to get a 5000# gauge attached to JD hyd male tip & insert in breakaway coupler then activate scv control to pressurize the gauge.

Congratulations on putting trans control in tow position before towing. Over the yrs many tractors have been towed when trans selector was not in tow.

If it steers fine one way,,and not the other,,you have a valve issue,,the steering will work fairly well even at lower standby pressure..and yes,, they can get this way with out warning..

This/these steering valves - are they located in the steering unit under the cowl?

I'll be back here after having tried the suggestions y'all have provided - probably mid week next week. QUESTION - is it best I return to these comments or begin a new series of questions/comments?

Thanks for your patience!

Here's something else that may or may not be important. The guys doing the work (I'm beyond being able to do that and was consulting with a physician that day) advise when they started the engine after installing the hydraulic pump to check for leaks etc, - and while the front end was still out from under the tractor - the steering wheel spun pretty vigorously.

Any way, I'll be checking back.

I suggest that you reply back to this thread.

Steering valve is under dash comprised of components in both photos below. Steering valve assembly is heavy & awkward to handle. I suggest to get someone experienced such as Tim S to repair your steering valve.

Update on 4020 steering issue.

Pressure checked out at 2000. Mike, the fellow doing the work, reported the bleed screw on the bleeder valve was "frozen up" and once he freed that up he was able to get substantial improvement by bleeding air from the system. He noted the front end is not bearing any weight at this point. He proposes further bleeding before getting into the steering unit.

What do y'all think
