Identify this John Deere 40 carb

Posted on the JD site as well. Saw this JD 40 for sale on Facebook marketplace and Ive been around JD 40s and 420s all my life and Ive never seen anything like this.

Well I all I can say its definitely not a Marvel Schebler carb, interesting in that the owner described this as a good running tractor..
 
Some custom fab intake work as well . Maybe some dremel porting and polishing going on as well. Have you heard it run ?
 
It's possible it runs well with the side-draft carburetor conversion with it's homemade 90 adapter.

What's more concerning (to me) is the apparent lack of an air cleaner on a "tractor".
 
I dont know the owner nor have I heard it run, just saw the ad while searching for a JD 40 or 420 parts tractor
 
Looks like a whole lot of extra work just to say you can. In reality it's just a means of controlling fuel and air to the engine. You could make a downdraft carb work just as easy.

It won't run long. No air filter is bad but unhooking the governor rod and using it for the throttle just about guarantees a rod through the side of the block.
