Hi,

I had the fuel injector pump rebuilt about 3 years ago. I'm having an issue getting it started if it sits for a week, everything is tight, no air in the filter, but its acting like its air bound

ounds like a leak. I'd clean everywhere north of the pump, let it sit then look for a leak. Leaks can turn into sucking air when cranking / starting

What are you working on????? Truck, car, tractor, combine, irrigation motor................... More details will surely help with getting pertinent answers.

Kind of a general question but knowing what machine you are asking about may help you get the best replies. Fuel supply line or hose leaking the tiniest bit of air in will cause your issue. Even though the filter appears to have no air in it. Slightly pressurize the fuel tank every so carefully with an air blower and a rag around it in the fill neck, then check for leaks. Some systems have check valves that can go bad. You do not say if it has a separate mechanical supply pump, those can also cause this problem.

I had about the same problem with my JD diesel. Very hard starting. My problem was the lift pump not suppling sufficient fuel to the main pump. It did pump, but was weak. A new lift fixed my hard starting when cold. stan

It may be a 1959 Ford 641D

I assume the hard start just means a long cranking time? Does it sound like 1-2 cyls are firing but others not? Does it run good after it starts or does it run rough for several seconds/minutes ? Does it smoke during cranking or after startup? What color is the smoke, whitish/grey or black? Does it start fine after sitting a couple hours or overnight, any smoke then?

Well at this time of year depending on where you live fuel jelling is one thing , a getting tired engine is another thing , batterry's that are really not up to snuff , a starter not spinning fast enough due to drag injectors not breaking and proper spray pattern , engine type and MFG. is it gravity feed or lift pump fed . Really need more info Do you plug it in a couple hours before want to go play?? MFG of tractor model of said tractor .

Im sorry I left a few details out

Its a Ford 59 641-D Tractor
Gavity fed
Injectors never rebuilt
within the last year this started happening

I know you said the injection pump was rebuilt 3years ago, but are you gaining any oil in the pan that would indicate the umbrella seals are leaking, is it weeping fuel on the outside anywhere

Cranking speed is important too, you could try hooking up a jump box or another vehicle and see if the extra boost makes it start .
