IH 656 loader hydraulics

Hello everyone, I'm going to pick a 656 up this weekend and it has a PTO pump for the loader. The pump has a seal out and I've been debating about just getting rid of the pump completely and running it off the tractor hydraulics. Do these tractors have enough hydraulics to lift a round bail? Or am I better off just fixing the pump. I was told years ago that always running a PTO pump is hard on a tractor, I don't know if that's true or not but if it is I'll learn more towards running it off the tractor. Thanks!

Tractor hydraulics 12-ish GPM and 1650 PSIG compared to 20 or better GPM and 2000 PSIG. Just will be slower. I have lifted round bales over 2000lb with a 560 and a 2001 loader, which is less than a 656 for hydraulics. Would not want to be doing much of that though.

I have a 656 Hydro, and I run the 2001 loader from the rear remote outlets. It's a little slow, but not bad. M0ve the pump to the front and you would have a nice setup then.

I dont see why it would be hard on it, you can shut it off when u want to, its quick and easy, so how much are those big yellow pumps ?? I like the separate pump rather than tractor Hyd!

I have a 2250 loader that's been on a 460D, a 706 gas and now on a 756D. All run off the tractors remotes with no problem. Moved a bit of dirt building a culvert one year with no problem. I'm not going into business with it but it works fine for farm use.

I think you will need to look for an industrial model for the front mount pump or run it off a belt since the front bolster and radiator will be pretty close and in the way for much of a pump. I suppose one couls lengthen the frame some but then that would look silly and increase turning radius.

I'd just use the tractor outlets. They are modern enough that they should easily have the pressure to do it. Open system though, so they pump slower at low engine speeds.

Dad had a farmall H with a pipe loader and used tractor hydraulics. SLOW

If you don't have live pto, a pto pump is worthless.

I bought a Jubilee with a loader. The hyd pump was connected to the front of the engine to the crankshaft.

(quoted from post at 17:46:41 01/17/22) Sounds good guys, does anyone know if constantly running the PTO is actually hard on a 656??

Did this same person also tell you if you kept making that expression, that your face would freeze that way?

Define "hard." What exactly did they say would wear out quickly or sooner by running the PTO? Will it wear out in fewer physical years? OF course, you're USING it. If you don't use it it will never wear out.

That running the PTO is "hard" on the tractor is nonsense.

(quoted from post at 18:06:44 01/17/22) I'm definitely gonna look at pumps for the front and back.

The advantage of the external pump is it's probably 20+ GPM rated. GPM means speed. The cycle time on the tractor hydraulics will probably be twice as long. Not a problem if you're not in a hurry, but you will appreciate the faster movement of the PTO pump if you intend to do any significant amount of loader work.
