I remember as a kid we were behind a pickup that had two dogs in the truck bed. Key word here is 'had'. When the truck passed us, one of the dogs had been drug alongside for so long (driver side, no less!) that 1/3 of the dog was missing. The other dog was still in the bed of the truck and looked scared to death.

The rope that the dog was tied with was fairly short, so what was left would just barely touch the ground.

After that experience, I think I would rather have my dog loose in the truck bed or not there at all. To this day, I've let dogs ride in the passenger seat, but NEVER in the truck bed!

I see that quite often.

I've never had a dog that I could trust to ride in the back. Tried it a couple times with one big dog I had. Only made it a few miles and out he went, hit the road rolling, and up he came! The distraction, a family cookout. Found him begging at their table!

Put him back in, did it again in a few yards. Never trusted him again, nor tried it with any other dog.

Had a lady come by my shop many years ago, had a dog tied in the back. She got out, came in the shop, found me, and we walked back out to the truck.

The dog was hanging over the side, spinning around desperately trying to get free. She didn't seem concerned, just slowly walked over and threw it back in the truck bed.

yep. And another reason I got a crew cab dually. Each dog has a rear door with a fence between the front and rear seat with a eat cover on the rear seat.

We used to ride in the back of the pick up quite often when young in the 60s, it was normal to see. I often had a dog in the back in the 70s and 80s and never had one jump out. I had one big male Bloodhound, over 120lbs he liked to ride with his front feet on roof and looking ahead, it wasn't the most pleasant view in the rear view mirror though.

What gets me is Healers and such ride on the back of 1 ton flatbeds with nothing but the friction of their paws keeping them in. Never saw one thrown. Other thing is the dog waiting on the truck for the master, especially in temperature extremes. Owner goes into the cafe for a meal and some chit chat and the dog waits patiently in the cab with the windows down (in the summer) or on the flat bed. Amazing,

In Oklahoma I saw so many flat bed pickups come to town with a border Collie on board I quit paying attention to them. A local veterinarian here used to preach to people to not let the dog ride in the back of the pickup and certainly do not tie the dog if it is back there. He had good reason to say what he did because he was the one who had to try to fix up broken and maimed dogs. He also preached to not let the dog stick it's head out the window while the vehicle was going down the road. He had to remove bugs from dogs eyes because of it.

I don t like seeing Animals riding like that , too
much danger to the Animals . To each his own but they
wouldn t treat family like that .
