6 Volt Condenser Source?

The condensors voltage withstand rating is MUCH higher then only 6 or 12 volts anyway so thats not what matters as much as its capacitance matching the coil used and ignition system. Ive bought them from Brillman or NAPA and suggest those sources over the big box TSC or Rural King type of stores. Manyyyyyyyyy new ones are bad out of the box nowadays grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr and often an old ratty looking original is BETTER then a new one. A true capacitance tester can measure its capacity and leakage etc. Are you sure the old one is bad ???

Having trouble getting the points to fire. Checked ignition switch, coil, and filed the points. Points fired for a little bit then stopped. I also checked the continuity to make sure points opening and closing circuit is correct..

John T,,, I 2nd that. And the 'condenser' is the most misunderstood part of an engine. It's purpose is to prolong the life of the points, thats all. The engine will run fine without it......points will arc up badly and quickly. However, for a test, you can just leave the condenser out, for 5 minutes. imop.. 40+ yrs CET.

When you filed the points you might have filed them off parallel or maybe not smooth enough so they pitted quickly. Try smoothing them with a folded piece of 400 to 600 grit wet and dry sandpaper.

John; Can you explain how the condenser has to stand a much higher voltage than what is inputed to the coil? Seems to me there is more coming out of a coil than what is put in?

That is an ECH-IH200 at NAPA - but it is over twice the cost of the one on eBay. The condenser on eBay could very well be from across the pond - and if it does work the first time, it could easily fail soon after that. I usually use the old condenser if it's working, and if I do need a condenser I get it from NAPA. I've just had too many of the cheap condensers not work or fail - and they usually fail when they're the farthest away from the shop.

ot John, but if coil is typical 100:1 turns ratio, when the HV out is 20,000, the primary will be 200.
