Early U had a Continental flat head. Late U had Allis Chalmers ohv.

Yea if you keep gas in them, i had a old neighbor, Wendell, he had one his dad had bought new,he switched it over to L.P.Gas,it worked out pretty good after he took a 1/4 in off the head, LOL!!!

Manufactured to be sold under the 'United' brand. That's cast into the top front of the radiator. So calling it the model 'U' made
sense.

A little more research shows- 1929,1930,1931 tractors built with flat head Continental, sold by AC and United. The UM engine in the AC only tractors starting in 1932 was actually made by Waukesha.
