Neighbor has a 306A he wants to get rid of since he bought a new stihl. Looks pretty decent, 20 bar. I know these are probably obsolete but is there parts for them? Are they a decent saw?

Poulan was never high on the list of great chainsaws.
I have a Poulan woodshark. When it would work was a good saw.
mines hard to start. But then, it has poor compression, scored cylinder etc
Parts to repair it are under 25.00 on eBay.
Lots of stuff available on e bay Depends on what shape it is in. If the cylinder and rings are good,
then thorough cleaning of the fuel system will give you a good saw.
Not spectacular, but acceptable. just imho

I have a Craftsman 14 chain saw since 1973. It was made by Poulan. It has been a trouble free saw. It's equipped with 1/4 inch micro-chisel and I've used it a lot. In fact, back when I had kids at home, we used wood to heat the basement with a wood stove. I even bought another one just like it at an estate sale. In the early '80's the boys and I found both saw while cleaning up dead trees in shelter belts. I'd cut & trim dead stuff & the boys would take turns dragging & bucking to stove length. I think I still have a couple of wore out bars & chains laying around. I used one to trim some trees a couple of years ago & it started & ran like a trooper on fresh weed eater gas.

Just some trivia for you. The chainsaw used by Leatherface in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie was a Poulan 306a

Don't get rid of the old chain and bar. I was hacking on roots from a tree. I was not getting anywhere. I cleaned some dirt as best as I could from the roots, and used my 12 inch Echo, worked great, even though I cut some dirt. If I had my old bar, and chain I would have replaced it. Stan

IMHO - they are a great chainsaw. Id imagine parts can be found with a little internet searching.

The Poulan of the 60's and 70's, into the mid 80's is not the Poulan we know today. They made pro grade saws back then, right up there with Homelite, McCulloch and Pioneer. The 306 is a good solid saw. If the saw is in decent shape they are just as good now as then. Yeah, heavy, no chain brake, AV is pretty basic at best. Lots of parts out there and easy to work on.
