Honda small engine

Got a new Honda horizontal shaft engine that I am installing on a baler. What viscosity of engine oil is best for these engines ? It will be ran in Temps from 25 to 95 degrees F and a constant 9 hrs a day for extended periods.

So what amount of hours could be expected out of that Honda engine? On a baler, that engine will be under a load most of the time, what can one expect? I have a Honda engine on a clear water pump that gets used about 5 hours a year to pump out the 6000 gallon pool, expect it to last well beyond my lifetime at that rate. Just curious concerning longevity as a baler engine. gobble
 
The old engine is a Honda GX 135. It and the baler were bought new 12 yrs ago. It has ran 9 hrs a day, except for rainy days and Sundays, usually 8 months straight at a time. Going back with a GX 200 for a tad more umph. Old engine still runs good, but it's gotten mighty thirsty on the oil bottle.
 
If we had the model number, it possibly could be found.

The expected life has been calculated by the manufacturer, the info is somewhere, whether it is available to the public I don't know.

But if an equipment manufacturer were to contact an engine supplier and ask what the life is, they would be given a list with available options.

But I would expect the number to be lower than real life results. I remember, probably back in the late 80's I bought a Stihl string trimmer. Somewhere I came across the information, may have been in the manual, that said the engine was rated at 13 hours of life! I was so disappointed, I had just paid $95 for that thing!

Well, 30something years later, and who knows how many hours, it's still alive!

Though the Honda engine pictured is a good mid range engine, there are commercial engines that are designed to run much longer. You don't see them on retail shelves because people would not buy them. They end up factory installed in commercial and industrial equipment.
 
If you can still read the tag on that trimmer, I think it might say the engine would be emission compliant for 13 hours, but that seems short. I think cheap weed eaters are 25 hours, better ones like Stihl are at least 50 now.
 
When you say baler, I think of a hay baler. What are you baling 9 hours a day for extended periods??Inquiring minds want to know!
 
Bale hay for 14 16 or more hours when the hay is right you bale . Lots of days go home shower take a nap and right back to it
 
The new engine will say what oil to use on the engine.

An old timer told me when braking in a new engine not to use the slick stuff, use regular weights.

I would recommend you change the oil the first time after 50 hours or in your case 5 days. Then every 100 hours or 10 days if you are going to run it 10 hours per day.

I have an old 20 hp honda. I change oil and filter when the oil starts to turn dark, use regular oil 5w30 or 10w30. Never go past 100 hours. Never used synthetic. No reason you can't spend extra if it makes you feel better. Some engines the oil turns black before 100 hours.
My daddy said changing oil is cheaper than an engine overhaul.

I would add an hour meter. Find on Amazon or Ebay with a replaceable battery and a wire to put around spark plug wire to measure RPMs and hours.
 
I run 10w-30 full synthetic wally world oil in all my small engines. I used to run dyno oil but once I switched I noticed the difference in frequency of oil change requirements. I can run longer with cleaner oil and no noticeable consumption. That oil has ben certified by GM for use in their late model cars and trucks. Forget the name of the certification but its on the container in green, just like the popular national brands.
 
Brand new from a Honda dealer (true Honda) or from a place like Harbour Freight, Princess Auto (Canada) etc. which would make it likely a Honda Clone (and tagged as a 'Honda'). Not sure how that happens but it does.

So no manual or oil recommendation if there is a manual?
 
It's a true Honda engine. We never received any manuals for the original set up nor this replacement engine for it. Dad was in charge of the first engine and would pour any kind of engine oil in it if it was wet and slick. Hoping we can do a little better on this engine. I think that was the demise of the original engine.
