Now I'm full of questions. This appears to predate the MD, or WD9. Apparently IH started production of the gas/diesel in a crawler
tractor before it was used in a farm tractor?

For what it is worth the Cat in the background is the better more durable tractor of the 2. Better engine uses less fuel per day and will pull more with the heavier tractor. Better roller frame too.

As far as I know, the gas/diesel engine was much the same from crawler to tractor and introduced simultaneously.

That's what I thought. This engine doesn't look like the farm tractor engines. And I think that prominent crank is the only means of starting!

I had a Cat D2 and that thing would sit and idle all day on 2 gallons of fuel.
After using it building my pond, I sold it for what I had in it.

Looks like a TD40, 5 rollers and has the tin over the sprocket. Looks like a narrow one unless the photo angles are playing tricks on me.

IF In fact it is a 35 would be rare I am leaning toward a 1933 td 40 as one says it has sprocket covers which pretty much makes it a 40 . Very early diesel at any thought .
