Massey Furguson 1533 transmission and hydraulic system shares the same hydraulic fluid. After replacing a hydraulic hose, I mistakenly added 5 gal of 30w oil to the hydraulic system. It holds 8 gallons total.
How should I go about flushing the system, etc.?
Thanks,
Copperhead

If it is a modern 30wt oil it has EP additives in it already. If it is like 30 years old it might not. Honda and others are using
motor oil in manual transmissions. Were it mine I would probably drain out 3 gallons and replace it with the correct oil. then
use the drained oil as oil can lubricant. Jim

Do you have a receipt from me receipt from the pawn shop they should have some record of him might help
when the cops track you down. Randy

Is this a hydrostatic transmission? If so I would avoid operating it until proper oil is in the system. Drain out whats in there ,
Put in the proper oil and change the hyd filter and you should be fine. If youare worried about flushing the system , I would just
do another hyd. oil change fairly soon but I doubt if it would be necessary.

I wouldn't worry about
flushing/cleaning the system out. I
don't know that I would even worry
about draining all of it out.
Especially if you just going to put it
in jugs and burn it on the brush pile.
I would probably likewise do as
Janicholson says. Replace 3 gallons or
so, so that the ending mixture is more
right than wrong.
I heard a JD dealership tractor
mechanic when asked about hydraulic
fluid contamination (changing
equipment from tractor to tractor and
they don't all use hy-tran), and he
basically just said don't worry about
it. So if it don't hurt the fluid to
be blended hydraulic fluid and hy-
tran, probably not going to hurt it if
it has some 30 weight mixed in.

If you have not run the tractor then drain the reservoir until no more oil drips out. If in the cold like the northern states
are experiencing and no immediate need to run the tractor then 24 hours. Then refill with the correct oil. If you have already
circulated the incorrect oil then best to call a dealer to get a recommendation.

I think I would drain what comes out and call it good enough. Fill it with correct oil and dump the drained stuff in the diesel barrel. End result--nothing wasted.

Don't know what to tell you.

I will say both my terramites have a warning sticker NOT to use
Hydraulic fluid. Only use 10w30 or 10w40 really cold 5W30. My
terramites use only one oil for hydraulics and HST.

Based on that I ask how can straight 10w30 oil damage hydraulic
hoses or hydraulic pump?? I don't know the difference between
hyd fluid and motor oil or why terramite wants only motor oil
and not hydraulic fluid.

I accidentally filled mine with gasoline instead of oil.
Drained it, added new Oil. no damage.

Tractor hydraulic fluid is also rated as gear lube engine oil is
not . Thats what you cant find AW 32 or other hydraulic oil
thats only rated for hydraulic systems .

Is it hydrostatic? What do you use it for?

If you're just mowing, light tractive loads, I would be tempted to just run it.

Lots of hydrostat units run engine oil.

I am with the it won't really hurt anything , If it makes you feel better drain down 2 or 3
gallon and top off with the right fluid and you should be fine.

Id be concerned about the transmission gears getting the right treatment, so I would drain out the oil and put in the proper oil.

I would not get very concerned at all about minor residues left in the tranny. That wont be a bother.

But I would worry about having the right additives in the gears. Motor oil might not treat them well long term.

Also in my climate going from below zero to over 100f any given year, I would worry about having the right consistency oil for the machine all year around. Too thin or
too thick can be an issue.

If it were only the hydraulic system, I would be inclined to just leave it and see how it worked, be good enough. But with the transmission involved that is a whole
different thing?
