Me and my oldest son had a chance to finish up the 12v conversion tonight. Why I waited 20 years to finally get mad enough to do it other than trying to keep it original is beyond me. It's running and charging on idle now before I can get my hands off of the starter rod. It was definitely a long overdue project. Thanks to everyone that provided wiring help for it in a previous post.

Congratulations on a job well done!

Originality is GREAT for trailer queens/Correct Police tractors, but for a working tractor upgrades/modernization makes things BETTER!

Those old 6V systems were a pain from new as far as I'm concerned and especially now with the poor quality regulators.Have changed all my old ones over to 12V alternator.

Good deal!

But do be careful with the starter. Some handle the conversion well, some are more fragile.

Be very deliberate with your starts, start it as few times as necessary. Be sure everything is ready, no extended cranking. Be sure the timing is set correctly so no kicking back.

But the most important, be sure the engine and starter have come to a complete stop before engaging the starter again. Hitting the starter when the engine is spinning back off a compression stroke can break the drive or nose cone of the starter!

I converted my JD430 over to 12 volt years ago and have never regretted it. It always cranked slowly before, now you can hardly get your hand off the starter rod fast enough. It is also much easier to find 12 volt lights, than 6 volt.
