Delco Remy Starter Serial Numbers

I am restoring my 1952 Farmall MD and part of the Delco Remy 12V starter serial tag is missing from the starter. I want to replace it, but am missing the serial numbers. My model number is 1108913.

I was told by the guy at the starter/generator shop that the serial numbers were all the same on each model. Not sure if that is correct or not. Does anyone know? I at least would like to know the numbering convention for the serial numbers, if anyone knew or was willing to share their serial numbers off of their Delco Remy Model 1108913 12V starters.

Apparently these model starters were used on the following: Farmall MD, MDV, MTA, International ID-6, ID-6A, ID-9, McCormick ODS-6, Super WD-6 and Super WD-9.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you,

Joe

Hello Joe welcome to YT. In actuality the number on
that tag is the Delco-Remy part number or unit number
not a serial number. So your generator shop guy was
correct in saying the numbers would be the same on
multiple units. This is correct to a point, when a tractor
is built certain specifications for the starter are set by
the manufacturer. So in this case IH used Delco-Remy
to supply their starters. So they built the starter to that
spec and tag it with the part number and supply them
IH to install on the tractors as they are assembled on
the line. Now if IH decided something in the starter
needed changed or upgraded then new specs are
given to Delco and a new starter is built to that spec
and provided to IH under a different part or ID number.
So all that said this site offers reproduction blank tags,
see link. And note if you happen to web search for
these ..reproduction.. tags know the black tags were
used for 6 volt systems and red are for 12 volt.

As an additional example YT lists a replacement Starter Drive Housing for the MD in their parts listing. If you look at the 1st link you will see at least 8 different Delco starter numbers use the same housing and most likely the all fit some model of Farmall tractors. Oddly enough the number you gave 1108913 is not one on there list. I also did a search on that number and the Delco Remy sites shows it as superseded by No. 1113057 see 2nd link. That number is not on the YT list either. And of course both are shown as obsolete. Not sure what this all means. Hopefully someone will chime in here with a starter number of an original MD.

The second part of the tag number on a Delco starter with a seven-digit part number is a "date code" indicating the year of the decade, month, and day it was made.

GOOGLE "Delco starter date codes", a lot of the results will be GM car restoration sites, but, no matter the same date code system was used on your tractor starter.

"Serial Numbers and Date Codes found on Delco-Remy parts: Originally the parts were given a serial number in numerical order. These numbers are usually on the older part numbers that were three to four numbers and a letter. Later when DR went to seven digit numerical only part numbers an actual date code was instituted on the oval DR ID tags. The first number is the year, followed by a letter representing the month, and the last number was the day of the month. According to Ted Vinson the tags cost about $0.10 a piece back in the 1950s. The numbers were originally stamped on but later rolled for cost reduction.

A date code of: 3B22 would have been built in the third year of the decade (this has to be figured from the year vehicle it is on), and February 22nd. Below are the monthly codes which did not use "i" as it looks like a 1.

Jan - A, Feb- B, Mar - C, Apr - D, May -E, Jun -F, Jul - G, Aug - H, Sep - J, Oct - K, Nov - L, Dec - M.

Also the tags were colored coded for voltage: Black for 6 Volt, Red for 12 Volt, Green for 24 Volt, and possibly yellow or orange for 32 Volt."

Looked at a diesel starter on a SMTAD and it only has the Delco number and 3- digit code. But it's newer than your starter. Delco number would be the same on all tractors used on. For information don't think the starter 1108913 was used on any 9 series. If I remember correct all 9 series starters mounted brush end toward front of tractor. Other than MD starter 1108913 was used on 6 diesels and Super 6 diesels until change from bathtub frame to frame rails. On SMD to the start of what is called a stage 2 SMD. Stage 2 and SMTAD used the same starter that is different than 1108913. Although MD and stage 2 supers have the same 3 bolt mount pattern, center housing is made so flywheel is a different distance from starter between stage one and stage two supers and a MD is the same as a stage one super.

Thank you all for the information; this is very helpful and informative. I knew someone on here would know!

Given the serial number of my generator, with this code, it makes sense. I have a pretty good idea of what serial number could be on my starter.

I am still curious if anyone would chime in, who has a serial tag on their Delco 1108913 starter, as to some of the date serial numbers on them.

If not, I have a good place to start. All of you help is greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Since the info for yours is irretrievably missing, if you know when your tractor was built, stamp a date code of a few weeks to a month or two earlier on the starter tag, I don't think anyone will be able to prove it's "wrong".
