going to look at a john Deere 5103 tractor, 2wd with loader,
i ve never heard of this model, is it an odd model?
was many made? parts available?

anyone have, had, or used one?
price seems reasonable, but I really have not heard anything about this model,

thanks for your help

Don't KNOW ABOUT A 5103, but I have a 5303 65HP made in India JD has all parts needed, Pretty good tractor. It's light, so if you do heavy type work, you'll need to add some weight or make some kind of arrangements. Reverse is where low gear is on all other tractor and reverse is connected to second gear, so pretty fast in reverse. But I use a 10' disk cutter with a dolly, when cutting I run in 3rd gear mid range and it handles the 10 footer very good. Hope this helps

Ever use TractorData, like Johns link? It looks like the 2wd has a pretty outdated transmission, for loader work. I would never buy a 2 wd for loader work after having one with fwa. If that's what your used to and the price is right, maybe.

I have a 2008 J/D 5203, 4x4, 522 FEL, 655hrs. Runs great does everything I need it to do.

I have 5103 2WD version with a 512 loader. It is a very handy tractor. With both rear tires load with washer fluid it handles big round bales or big square bales just fine. We moved a lot of brush and logs with this tractor. Very maneuverable.

About as simple of a newer tractor you can buy that is built like a 1970s Utility tractor.

Made in India, tons of them made in all sizes. (03, E series)

The 9x3 transmission has weird spacing and overlap, check the speed chart to make it will do what you want it you have jobs that need certain speeds at PTO RPM etc.

Almost all of them locally were on 16.9-28 tires, so load them up and you should have lots of weight.

3rd reverse is basically useless.

I have a 2 wd JD 5203 , next size up from 5103. They were the no-frills economy model built in India using the tried and true JD 179 cu. in. 3 cyl engine. I do not have a loader on mine but it has done well here for me. Mostly used to mow hay , occaisionally runs the square baler , and other jobs as needed. Parts are readily available . Mine was purchased nearly new with less than 100 hrs on it in 2006. I also own a JD 5105 with mfwd and a loader, which is a great tractor , different transmission than 5xx3 series. I am well satisfied with both. I do like the mfwd for the loader tractor.
