IH 350 Transmission problem

Hi, I just picked up a 1958 IH Farmall 350 gas tractor. It ran ok for a couple of weeks. Today, I started it up and shifted into 1st but it wouldn't move and I could stall it out if I let the clutch out all the way. I tried other gears and no go. I left it in neutral, let out the clutch and it would go like it was in fifth gear. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Glenn

Likely, the gearshift lever slipped out of engagement with a shift fork, leaving the transmission shifted in 5th gear while the shift lever was return to neutral.

Typically, you would need to remove the transmission cover and put the shift forks all back into the neutral position, then replace the cover while being sure the bottom end of the shift lever engages with the aligned slots in the shift forks.

Thank you for the quick response. I'm guessing the shift lever needs replacing or this will keep happening?
Thanks again,
Glenn

Wear in the forks and lever add up to make it easier for things to slip out of place.

Shifting "accurately" may help keep it from happening again.

Do not remove the transmission cover. Pull the shift lever out. That is three 3/8 bolts. The shift rails can be realign with a large screw driver. The end of the shift lever needs to be re built. The corners are round now, but need to be built up and filed or ground back to square. Use the shift rail slots as a guide to the size that the shifter is rebuilt to.
Not difficult it do at all.

As the others have said the shifter came out of place and it and did not move the last gear it was in back to neutral. Also as was said by SDE on the model you have the ..shift tower.. unbolts from the trans deck cover. In the 1st attached link it contains rough dimensions for the shifter tip. The dimensions are for an H & M but I am 80 percent certain that the shifter tip was the same on these later models as well. So the reason I am giving you this is if wear on the tip of your shifter seems evident you can weld up the end and grind it to the dimensions shown. Then you will be back in business and hopefully stay away from this issue during future use. If the dimensions in the link seems way off disregard them because there must have been a change between models. In that case I am sure if you study the tip well and see what looks to be worn away and replace that metal I am sure you can get it built back up properly without dimensions. Secondly make sure the shifter is not real loose up and down in the shift tower. In the attached diagram of the 2nd link spring 5 holds the shifter up against the swivel ball on the shifter. The spring pushes down against shield 7, so make sure that you can turn that shield slightly on the gear shift to show it is not rusted in place. On the farm I grew up on we had both a 350 and 300 as well as two Hs and an M ..I still have the M.. All suffered from the same problem. Generally if you are familiar with the motion you can maneuver the shifter to pop back in the proper position and go on. That takes a little experience though. Hope this helps!

The end of the shift lever is only one of the parts that wear. Most wear is usually found in the hole in the tower the pins goes through, then the long pin goes through a short pin and both wear bad. Also, sometimes the hole in shift lever is worn out.

I have repaired a few , like a hundred or so, over the years with different methods I developed. There is a shifter fix kit sold on line by someone who makes a real inexpensive repair kit. Unfortunately for me , I was pretty well done repairing those old tractors when I found that.

If that shift lever moves up and down and side ways too much, you need to correct that for good results.
