Did you know America exports hay?

For 20 years, Greg Jackson has exported hay and grass grown in Californias Imperial Valley to places like China, where an increasing number of dairy farms rely on American alfalfa and other forage crops that are in short supply locally. As the executive vice president for sales at Border Valley Trading in Brawley, Calif., Jackson has arranged for shipping containers to ferry hay from the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach across the Pacific Ocean.

Yes Geo , I did in fact know the USA exports hay. Canada also exports hay as well. Some of the hay from Canada goes to places like China and oil rich Arab countries. But most of the exported Canadian hay goes to USA, southeast states.

Did u know USA imports Oats, from France, we get it in by the ship load, comes into the Houston Port! It was nice, high quality race horse oats! It use to be General Mills use to buy 2nd quality oats, but they stepped up their game now too!

More correctly the US exports water. No water, no hay. At at time when Lake Meade is at an all-time low, farmers in the Imperial Valley are using Colorado River water to grow hay for export.

Been shipping it out of ellensburg wa. for decades , its the biggest industry 30 miles from me thousands of containers a day make 2 runs of 109 miles from e-burg to the port of tacoma and back with hay

It was probably 25 years ago I visited a plant that would compress small square bales for export.

The machines they had would squash a bale down to half it's original size then strap it.

Compressed like this they could get 20+ ton into a shipping container.

They were very picky about quality so any bottom bales that showed any signs of dirt or anything that was too high on moisture content they would set aside and sell them off for $1 a bale just to get rid of them.

This is something we agree on,using up our resources to for exporting ag products,no dumber though than subsidizing the growing of soybeans and corn to export to China to feed their army and slave labor.

Lots of Ottawa area south to USA border hay is exported to central north Florida, Ocala area.
Claimed to be horse capital of the world.
Our pastures stop growing in October and don't start growing until April.

Used to manage a commercial equine breeding ranch. Years ago South Dakota (best oat ground in the world) went through a terrible drought and Wilfred Brimmely was advertising the human benefits of oatmeal. Price of Dakota oats for horses became economically unreasonable. We fed, at height of breeding season, a semi load/week. Bought Scandinavian oats through the Port of Catoosa cheaper than Dakota oats. Big problem was Ca/P ratios werent balanced the way the northern oats were.
