Still Haying In December

Cut another (final!???) patch of hay yesterday. Now hoping it'll dry to roll up. Finally gave up on my Farmall 300 and went to a bit bigger tractor. The 300 just didn't handle the 9' cutter conditioner well. As to hay, I've been thinking of the old phrase: Don't look a gift horse in the mouth. The hay is free, but this has been an incredibly bountiful hay year here in south central Texas and I've got a huge amount (for me) on hand. Guess I'm complaining when I should be happy. Maybe I'm like the guy who'd complain if they hung him with a new rope!

this year has been unusual because we haven't had a long dry spell between rains. it has been spread nicely over the year. many years we end up with our annual average rainfall but too often half of the year's rainfall came in one or two days. I need to mow the yard before Christmas. jy

Cut my last patch 2 weeks ago. Glad to have all the hay as Ive been through 2 droughts the last 20 years. Those years were terrible. After them I make it a practice to keep 2 years of hay on hand. So much hay in this area that a lot of it is still in round bales in the field. My hay trap is full and I have bales lined up on the side of 2 fields. Long range forecast for the winter is colder & drier than normal and for next summer, hotter & drier. So Im guessing that we are gonna need this extra hay.

As recent as two weeks ago hay was being made in the Blue Ridge Mountains in parts of NC and southwest Virginia. We have been very, no dew or frosty mornings. The hay at cutting has very little moisture in it. Guys up that way say its much better than snowballs.

I have one field I need to get cut before frost hits here in SE Mississippi. Hope I have time with everything else going on with the holidays. If not the hay barn is full and I did cut back on the cows I have, so I should be ok this winter.
