Early Christmas present

I got a call Monday to do a mowing job I haven't done this year yet. I thought the company wasn't going to do it, as it's getting late in the year. The company sold a portion, and wants it all mowed. The ground is very clean and smooth probably 15 or more acres. Not flat, but rolling hills. Ten minutes from the shop. Nice day for mowing, not too hot, and weeds are dry this time of the year. Now it's going to rain tomorrow. It will be a few days before I am able to get back. Stan

Lucky you. The only mowing I would be doing at Christmas time is the snow. Really getting to hate winters and these short days.

I've always wanted to try a flail mower, it's rare to see one here. The few I've talked to that had one and said they are worthless, but that is probably due to lack of knowledge on them and most likely incorrect use or abuse. I've seen videos of flail mowers doing an excellent job cutting very thick material without leaving clumps like a rotary does.

The flail mowers are a different type of animal, they take a different mentality than a common rotarty mower. There are some things they do not do well like rocks, big limbs abd particularry wire, ropes and garden hose. Flail mowers do not come in stump jumper types either. I have used a flail mower since the late 7o's and I prefer it to the common rotary mower. If you have humps in your ground it will eventually smooth them out and the nicest thing is that it doesn't throw stuff. If it hits a bottle it just leaves it in a pile and goes on. People either love flail lmower or people hate them, rarely any betweeen people. I am thoroughly sold on the concept. I mow most of my yard with one but I do have to use the lawn mower close to the house.

I have a rotary mower I use if there is rocks, or heavy brush, It will chop up some heavy stuff. My flail mower is used is for mostly clean fields. You are right, about not liking water hoses, wire, rocks and also bed springs chain link fence. It will pick up about anything laying in the weeds. Stan

A light duty flail mower is easily damaged. Hit something solid and the drum can get out of balance and I've heard of the rear roller being torn out of the mower. This one is very heavy duty that I bought used. The manufacturer is a hundred miles from me so I pulled the drum and had them put new knives on it and balance the drum. Sure does a great job as long as you know the field is clear of junk or stumps.
