Oil separating

I have a 5 liter container of unused 10w-30 oil for a diesel engine that is at least 6 years old. I was moving it and the container opened a small crack and began leaking. So I got another container and started pouring. I was surprised when a very thin-like liquid came out first, then followed by thicker oil. Is this normal?

I'd say yes......additives settling out. I had a similar experience with old diesel C rated crankcase oil I had in a clear plasting drain pan
with a lid. Forget the number of years it sat but on the bottom was black goo and the oil was honey colored vs black when drained.

I would word it as yes, some of the additives rose to
the top. As for Texasmarks comment you call the oil
..old crankcase.. does that imply it was used oil? If it
was used oil I would agree. I have seen used oil in a
lawn mower clarify as it sat in the off season. When
checked the first time in spring before use it looks real
clean, after the first start and warm up the oil is back
to a darker high usually seen after use.

Did a tranny fluid change on my 71 Cougar. It takes type
F, not a fast mover. Used Pennzoil and noticed that all the
additives had settled to the bottom of the quart
containers. After that, poured 3/4 quart out of each one
and then shook it up real good before I continued
pouring. Its addictive separation. Shake your oil up and
use it.
