NO 15-40 OIL

i sure dont know whats going on here with 15-40 oil. been using castrol 15-40 in my duramax since new. 2 winters ago could not find it so i used mobil 1. then since then used castrol till this summer could not find it again. tryed very learily and use shell rotella 15-40. the other day checked the oil and down to the add mark. i have never ever added oil to this truck between oil changes have 444,000 km. leary because i tryed it in my tractor and the tractor was using more oil with this shell junk. been hunting for 15-40 castrol or mobil 1 oil now for weeks and have not found any. i was asking the walmart and canadian tire personal with all these diesels on the road what are they using for oil. looked all over edmonton , westlock, and was even in slave lake and no oil. i am baffled. as for shell i still say thats the worst oil out there.

The last thing I would do is flirt with the add mark. Expand your search to include online sources or put the Shell oil in. In my humble opinion engine failure has less to do with brand of oil used versus maintaining the oil level, pushing the change interval past its limit, using the incorrect weight or grade, or general neglect of the engine.

yes, i realize all that and i filled it also with the shell oil. but i dont want that junk in my truck anymore. it kinda shocked me the oil was down to add. i said that fricken shell. once i get castrol or even mobil back in i will monitor it closely , cause im sure i proved a point, and that you will get more engine wear using junky oil. plus i have proved it years ago on a ford 391 engine also.

Rotella T is not what it used to be. I use Mobil Delvac in everything except my van and that gets mobil 1 because it is Dexos qualified. I always keep at least enough oil and filters for one oil change ahead on my equipment, you never know when it won't be available

For several years I have been using Petro-Canada 15w40 in all my tractors including the gassers. Even the oil burner quit using oil.

yes, petro can is my next choice , there is a dealer in town and going to stop there. it is good oil.

I read a different thread this morning about oil being scarce, so I picked up a 5 quart jug today for the Subaru at WM. 0-20 Mobil 1, $27, and no rebate available. With crude at $66 there won't be any more rebates.

i also picked up a 5 litre jug of castrol 5-20 for the jeep yesterday was 36.00 plus the tax. used to buy it on sale for 20.00. with the filter total was 50.00

Why don't you bite the bullet and go with Amsoil? Not that much more than a 15-40 synthetic whether Rotella, Castrol, or any other 'known' brand.
If you don't want Amsoil, check out Schaffer oil. DOUG

Refined product supply is terrible right now due to the additives being hard to get. My supplier (Mobil) has put us on allocations, and we are having a hard time getting PM's done on time.

I have been to 3 Walmart stores in recent weeks and just for grins go by the oil section. Plenty of car oil but diesel rated shelves are bare.....couldn't figure why. Around here construction is booming and I figured they were scooping it up.....glad I stocked up last year. Talk about container ships trying to get unloaded and all but domestic oil doesn't come from Asia, last time I checked.

Why do you guys with several engines not just buy a barrel and be done with it? It would give you about a years supply with a cheaper price per gallon and not have to fool around with hunting oil each oil change. We've been buying oil by the barrel for over 50 years. Buy Hytran comparable like that too. With a dozen tractors semi and other equipment it just seems like a no brainer to buy the barrel.

Agree, or at least the 5 gallon buckets. I use a lot of ATF. I can buy a 2 gallon jug of "cheap" generic ATF at TSC for about $30 or I can go to the local auto parts store and get a 5 gallon bucket of the good stuff for $62!

You also need to run a few oil changes of shell oil through that engine so it gets use to the shell oil. We have shell rotella in over 20 engines on the farm and none burn oil

X 3. I switched to Petro when I found it at O'reilly's. Specs look identical to other brands of 15-40.

I have been told the same thing by a Shell distributor salesman. Seems Lubrizoil furnishes Shell additives. I don't get it, Very Frustrating.

So what are you going to do when you do find the castrol or mobil 1 and it does the same thing? Call the castrol junk or claim that the shell ruined your tired worn out 444,000km engine?

Even though it's cheaper per gallon, the price tag of a barrel of oil is a tough pill for most guys to swallow. Even if they have the cash in their wallet, they're naturally cheapskates and will go with just what they need because they don't want to tie all that money up in oil.

well it seams your the backyard engineer you should know better than make up something stupid. i posted my results with shell. and yes i
intend to continue with castrol and am hoping to hit 1 million km. for your information this truck has 8500 hrs. not a lot for a diesel.
and if i was using shell since new then maybe i might let you say my tired worn out 444,000 km engine. SO.... dont you have a stove to
work on?

I never did well with Castrol in water cooled engines. I did very well with it in air cooled engines when I had Corvairs and motorcycles. As far as synthetic goes, it is still basically a petroleum derivative, so I really don't consider it to be truly synthetic. I also don't think it is worth the extra money as compared to regular old petroleum oil. It gets dirty just the same, which is the real reason we change oil at specific intervals.

Not once have I ever cared what brand of oil to put in any engine I have ever owned. I need oil, I buy oil. Whatever is available at the best price and convenience in the proper viscosity.

Not once have I lost an engine.

Not once have I noticed an oil consuming engine using more or less oil depending on which brand was used.

COULD BE... the junk oil is properly cleaning the engine up and dissolving all the crud build up... SO now, your seeing the leaks or usage. Oil that is fortified with a higher TBN number will clean more than oil with the lower numbers. And if it keeps the sludge in suspension correctly, walla!!! you now are using oil due to the sludge being removed that the earlier oil did not do its job correctly. OR maybe not. But the oil you call junk oil does have a very good record with literally millions of hd vehicles in service. There is a volatility measurement that concerns how much oil is vaporized out the vent... and all the hd diesel oils meet that test.

Whenever I switch brands it seems like it takes a little while and a quart or two before the engine gets used to it . Goober will say its impossible but it isnt .
