Ford 640 water pump

The pulley split in half on the loader tractor. I have this new water pump on the shelf, and this old stuck one, off another 640. New has 4 bolt holes for pulley, old has 6 rivets?? I guess they don't interchange?

I see YT lists two different water pumps:

Ford 600 Water Pump - uses Bolt-On Pulley, which 'uses the bolt on style pulley, which does not come with the water pump and is not available.' It looks like that's what you have.

Ford 600 Water Pump - with Press-On Pulley, described as 'This water pump with press on style pulley replaces OEM CDPN8501C. This water pump comes with the pulley and is for tractor models 600, 601, 700, 701, 800, 801, 900, 901, 2000, 4000 - gas and diesel engines. Comes with rear cover plate and gasket. For tractor models with press on pulley. USES 3 BLADE FAN PART number NCA8600S or NCA8600B 6 Blade Fan Uses 4 1/4 inch mounting bolts on a 3 1/4 inch circle.'

Unless you can come up with a pulley, I'd say your best bet would be to use the pump with a pressed-on pulley. You may or may not need a different fan, but YT has those as well.

FWIW, Brand X (aka Steiner) only carries the pump with a pressed-on pully.

Have a Ford 4 cyl power unit in a Mobility big dipper loader. The water pump pulley did the same thing as yours. Found a used one from a tractor salvage yard. Was unable to find anything new. This loader spent several years in a Co-op fertilizer plant so everything is rusted. Hope that helps some. Steve.

> Why not drill the pulley to fit the new water pump?

Stan, it's not obvious, but the holes in question are in the small end of the pulley. (They're filled with dirt in the picture.) It would be tough to drill two extra holes between the existing holes, and it would weaken the pulley since the new holes would break through to the existing holes. And I expect if he tries to attach it with only two bolts the pulley will eventually fail.

The thing I love and hate about these old Ford tractors is the ability to swap parts(sometimes) I've got a tractor that was my dads and the water pump went out. No problem I went and got a pump for a 600 which I thought it was. Well got back home and it wasn't the same. I went back to the man with the old pump and showed it to him. He said you have a Jubilee not a 600 and sure enough it was the right one. He asked if it had the axle nut on the outside of the drum on back and I said no. Well come to find out that at one point my dad loaned it to his best friend who wasn't the brightest bulb on the line and he tore up the transmission trying to pull stumps out of the ground! Well they found a 640 with a busted block cheap and swapped the transmission and rear end with the Jubilee engine and front end! I have to stop and look close when buying parts to make sure I've got the right animal!

GP,
You are getting a good education. Been there, done that too.
Just toooooo old to do that anymore. Have fun.

I still feel like we did ok with it. It's something we have been wanting for use around here. We got it cheap.

That's all the counts. It's your money and no one should tell you how to spend it. Do what makes you happy and keep momma happy at the same time..
